How To Add Album Art: Step By Step

I have my music on my X with WMS (Windows Media Sync) I like it's ease of use. I asked a similar question 1 to 2 weeks ago.

Can I add the Album Art to my music file on my X. And how do I do that? So it comes up with the album that I play? A step by step would be nice.

Reading the reviews of some album art grabber apps,some don't like them. Saying that the art grabbed isn't permenant,etc. Is there a way to make the album art not delete but stay as long as the music is on there?

Is it easy to add the artwork. Let me know when you have the time.

My music is in my Windows Media Player in MP3 @ 320kbs.

I also have iTunes with the music in MP3 @ 320kbs.

Sorry my question is so noobish. But I cant figure it out on my own.

If you're using Windows Vista or Windows 7, just use Windows Media Player.

Open Windows Media Player (11 if you are using Windows Vista, 12 if you are using Windows 7)

Drag & drop music you want to sync to Windows Media Player to add it to it's Library.

To add album image, edit the information in Library or easier method...

Right-click on where the album image should be and select "Find album info" (internet connection required).

Windows Media Player will search Microsofts media database for matching album information, including album cover image.

Once you have edited or downloaded the album image and information, you try syncing with Droid X.

DROIDX should be listed near the bottom of the list in Windows Media Player, if not you need to connect or try reconnecting the Droid X with PC via USB cable.

Once DROIDX shows up in Windows Media Player, look at the top right and select Sync tab.

Click on Next device till you see DROIDX (left pane).

Drag & drop your music into the Sync list (left pane, under DROIDX).

Click on Start sync (left pane, above DROIDX)

Using my Windows Media Player is how I got my music on my X in the first place. All of my music in WMP has the Album Art.

It just didn't transfer over to my X when the music transfered.

I brought up WMP. Plugged in my X. WMP recognized it I started dragging and dropping whole albums to the right. Then hit SYNC. It synced up fast and easy. Just no album art.

So,that's my question how to get it on my X with the music already on it?

I downloaded Tag&Rename. But it lokes like it's got a learning curve. I downloaded the User Manual. But I didn't see anything specific as in a "How TO" with respect to adding Album Art to music already in place. Or to do it at all. I know that it can. It just doesn't say how.

I'm not a Nube with a computer. I learned Adobe PhotoShop,which has a STEEP learning curve. People at work showed me so much. As what I needed to do wasn't in the Photoshop help guides. Which I think is the same case here with Tag&Rename. I'm sure it will do what I want. It's manual just doesn't say how.

So,that's what I need to know. How?

Cover Art Downloader doesn't seem to be compatible with Android OS 2.3.

The DROID X has Android 2.2.1 and MotoBlur version 2.3...

Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) is a long way off from being loaded unto the DROID X.

I'm most definitely NOT a VZW employee. If a post answered your question, please mark it as the answer.

After you have sync'd your music onto the device the first time, the album art (or lack thereof) is already cached in Android, subsequent syncing of the same files will not update the album art, even if you completely delete and add the folder again.

To get your album art on to the device then it must either be embedded in the id3 tag or an AlbumArt.jpg file must reside in the folder, before you sync it the first time. Once you have done the initial sync without the album art the only way you can load it again is to delete the media database (Home > Menu > Settings > Applications > Media Storage > Clear Data) or use an application such as Cover Art Downloader which can repair the associations in the internal media database. Clearing Media Storage will not delete your media files, but it will delete all of your playlists and photo and video metadata, so using a grabber is your best choice.

As for album covers not sticking, that is only a problem with Album Art Grabber and Album Art Grabber Free, as these applications do not write the id3 tags or save AlbumArt.jpg to the folder, so all cover art not embedded in the id3 tag is lost if you wipe your phone or flash a new rom. Not even copying the album art cache folder will save it, as the new rom will create new album keys in the database on the first boot and the old associations and files will be lost. Cover Art Downloader has the option to save AlbumArt.jpg files and the donate version will write id3 tags, so it does not have the same problem with art disappearing. It is the easiest method for tagging your whole collection. You can use any of the other id3 taggers if you prefer the more manual and laborous approach.

Again, if there are any issues encountered running Cover Art Downloader on a Droid X, I would love to hear about it so I could fix the issues. There have been no such reports before this post and my stats show it is installed on about 2,500 Droid X's many of whom have left positive market feedback.

I am the author of Cover Art Downloader. Could you please let me know what kind of issues you are having with it on your Droid X? It has been tested on both Droid X and there are many happy Droid users on d1, d2, inc and x.

Fyi, it has been tested and works great on Android 2.3 (Gingerbread).

I have the cover art on most music in my itunes.  Some purchased from itunes and some converted from my cd's.  There seems to be little rhyme or reason to where there is cover art on my droid bionic.  I LOVE THE PHONE and just got it after turning back in my iphone 4.  The only problem I have is the art....not a big problem.

Well, I answered my own question.  After my last sync, almost all of my music has its art.  I might have interupted the sync before.  All good on the bionic!  Peace

Thrill Killer,

I just went through this having just upgraded my phone to a ThunderBolt (Froyo 2.2) -- I sync'd my music from Windows Media Player (WMP).  All my music was there.  However, the only tracks with cover art were those in which the art was embedded in the track.  Most of my tracks are .wma which don't have embedded art.  So, I searched around for a solution, and here's what I found:

WMP is storing the cover art as JPEG hidden system files in the folders where your music tracks sit.  To see them, from WMP do:

1. Right-click a music track --> Open file location;

2. From the file folder: Organize --> Folder and search options;

  View --> Show files, folders and drives;

  View --> (uncheck) Hide protected operating system files

Now you can see those cover art files.  What happens, is that when WMP syncs your music it's not copying these JPEGs.  You somehow need to get the JPEGs into their corresponding folders.  You can verify this by connecting your phone as a USB drive and manually copying a JPEG yourself (Pick the 200 x 200 pixel JPEG).

What I did to fix mine was trivial:

1.  I connected my phone as a USB drive and the file explorer and noticed my music under F:\Music was in the same directory structure as on Windows  .\My Music\, namely .\artist\album\tracks.

2. So, I manually deleted everything under F:\Music and then copied the folders manually from .\My Music\.

  --> This copies the album art as well as the tracks.

At least with ThunderBolt Froyo 2.2 there were no issues with cacheing or anything -- the covert art and music just show up.

I suppose you could even do this without deleting the existing files/folders:  Just do a manual copy from the top of the folder hierarchy and when it queries whether you want to over-write the music track files, just say "no to all".  But I haven't tried this.

Its too bad WMP doesn't simply copy the cover art during sync.
