How do I send an email to an entire group of contacts...

That's the only way. Just like you would send an Email to multiple addresses on a computer.

Create a group in the contacts app. When you want to send to the entire group, go to contacts, show the group, tap the icon to the right, and choose email.

This does not work...I can not get the emails in the "To" line when I do this

I took mine to the Verizon store yesterday.  Nobody could figure it out.  Finally they found an app called "gPhoneBook" that works like a charm.  Downloaded for free and am up and running. It even pulls your existing groups from gmail so you don't have to create groups and re-select from Contacts on the phone.  I'm happy!
