How to access the 8GB of internal memory?

Hi all.

Just moved from an HTC Droid Incredible to a Droid X and I am having issues adding my files. When I plugged in my Droid Inc, I got 3 folders on my PC. 1 install, 1 internal memory and 1 SD card. Well, when I plug in my Droid X I only get 2 folders. 1 install and my SD card. How do I access the files saved on my internal memory? And how do I add music and other files to it? Doesn't seem good for much if I can't have access to it ;-)~

Thanx ^_^

You can not access the root directory (Android doesnt allow access) because it is the internal storage dedicated for apps and app data, to access the sd card you should be able to plug in cable and from top status menu and select USB Connection >> USB Mass Storage and then access card under the PC directory labeled Storage.

Thanx for the reply.

My Incredible allows me access to the 8GB internal memory, why doesn't the Droid X? This isn't an Android issue I don't believe as I can access it on one Android device and not another. I have an app called OI File Manager and on my Incredible I can swap folders and files back and forth, but on my Droid X I can not. How am I suppose to get my pics and video off of it if I ever replace it? What if I want to store some music on there so I can free up my SD card? How would I add music and movies if I didn't have an SD card? Not all Droids come with SD cards (my Incredible didn't, I added a 16GB card later), so there must be some way to do it.

I should add I am not trying to access the 512MB ROM or the 512MB RAM, but the remaining 6.6GB they leave for storage or pics and things.

I purchased my phone a month ago, but didn't put in the sd card until now.  I know you have posted that we do not have write access.  I like my phone, but want the 30 pics I took before the sd card memory was used.  There has got to be a read access.  Please help.

there are probably more than a few ways to do this, one of them to just SHARE/EMAIL to yourself, then save to your PC or SD Card. Another way would be to install the (free) APP called DROPBOX. Once you register on their ONLINE site, you can use the SHARE option (in photo Gallery) and select DROPBOX. This will copy each picture up to DROPBOX on their server. Then you can download them back to your PC or wherever you want them to exist - even back to your phone's SD Card via a USB connection.

hope this helps.

on the android market is an app called root explorer that allows for access to system files. The TOS of this forum prevents me on giving links or instructions on using this invaluable app. Google for more info if your up for it.

As Wildman stated above, you need root access to have read/write privileges to the internal storage on the Droid X.

No kidding?!?! What crap!! 6.6GB of internal storage and I can't touch it? Then why is it there? What purpose does it serve then?

It's apparently there just for the system and for app storage, would be nice to be able to access the free space for storage but I guess that's not what they were going for with this phone.

Trust me, it's better than the alternative several other phones offer.  I'd rather have room I can't use, than not enough room. And you can always just put a 32GB card in if you run out of room for music and whatever else.

If you just have a crazy large music library, try audiogalaxy in the market. It will let you stream your entire collection from your computer at the house. And it's free.

Also I believe the system uses this storage area as virtual memory to access and process large files kind of like windows does with the quick boot configuration (Can dedicate a USB card as system memory to improve boot time)... Now as for being able to access internal storage on Incredible you kind of answered your own question, the device wasn't shipped with any external card so they partitioned some of the internal memory to allow access but partitioned memory always compromise system access time which means slower access time.

Hope this clarified things a bit more for you..
