I Am Receiving Multiple Duplicate Text Messages

I can't remember if this happened before I upgraded to Gingerbread but it's definitely happening now. Almost every single text message that I receive comes in multiple times, sometimes up to four times for each message. Often they will come one right after another but sometimes they'll come in hours later. Resetting and battery pulls have done nothing and I don't want to do a hard reset unless it's absolutely necessary.
I'm not sure if this is related but I also can't sem to receive picture messages anymore. It constantly asks me to "Download" or "Reject" the picture and if I touch "Download", it tries to load but ultimately it always comes up with an error.

There are so many issues that could be causing this. I've received multiple text messages from smartphones and regular phones. If I'm not mistaken, I would not attribute this to any text messaging overage (do check your details though). What I mean by this is your phone is displaying the content downloaded from the network multiple times (almost as if the phone doesn't recognize that the SMS has already been received). This should not generate any overages because the record on the network for an incoming SMS is sender -> receiver. That is the record you are billed for. So, if your issue with the whole duplicate text is billing, check your text message details. Visit www.vzw.com > Sign in as the Account Holder > Usage Details (under My Usage)> Select the line> View Messaging Details. Compare your duplicate texts records to the billing records and see if they line up. If they do, contact customer service.
There is also a possibility that people are having a problem with their handset sending multiple text messages. I say this because I have a basic phone, and I have received multiple text messages from my brother who has a Droid X. Of course if the sender is having issues with multiple text messages sending, you will have multiple text messages received, and you will of course have a billed record for each message that is transmitted to the cell number. I would attempt to clear the cache on the messaging app and start there. Clearing the cache of the messaging app can be done under Settings> Applications> Manage Applications> All> Messaging> Clear Cache/Data/Force Stop. Warning: This will likely remove your email accounts and erase all text messages.
If none of that works, you can try 1 of 2 things:
2) Try a 3rd party text messaging app. A search in the Market for "Text Messaging" should yield plenty of results.
Please post results/findings to help the community with this along with any other troubleshooting tips.
Thanks,

A number of users reported clearing their cache seem to help.... You can give it a try...
Wiping cache partition
- Power off
- Power On Holding Home Key
- When Andy with Exlamation Point Shows up Press BOTH Volume keys
- Use Volume Keys to navigate to "wipe cache partition" and tap power button to select
- Wait for it to finish and select reboot system
I use 1-click cleaner by OPDA team that also seems to do this well.. 1Tap Cleaner Free by Sam Lu is another good one also..

I researched more on this issue and found nothing related to duplicate messages. If clearing the cache hasn't corrected the issue. I would move on to a master reset. Go to Settings>Privacy>Factory Data reset>Erase Phone>Reset Phone. Let the phone reboot then follow the on-screen instructions for activation and set up. Make sure your personal info is backed up to Google. The SD card will not be effected by the reset.
Have a great day!

I did the master reset. It took me about two hours to reset the phone and get all of my apps, contacts and settings restored. A little over 24 hours after resetting the phone, I once again received a duplicate message. The next day, I received three duplicate messages. So far, it's only been two messages but, if the pattern holds from last time, it'll steadily increase over time until my phone just keeps going off because I'm receiving a message a dozen times or more (sometimes over the span of a few hours). Also, the reset has introduced a new problem that didn't formerly exist: my text message ringtone (the default Droid tone) will now go off randomly and, when I check my phone, there are no new messages at all. At this point, I assume that my phone needs to be replaced, as no one else seems to be experiencing this problem. I've had the phone for nine months so I assume it'll cost money to replace; money that I don't have. It that's the case, I guess I'll have to deal with going crazy from constantly hearing my phone go off.

If there is no physical or water damage to the phone, a warranty replacement will be free since you are still within the 1 year warranty period.
However, this sounds like an App issue. Are you using any 3rd party texting or notification apps from the market, other than the stock messaging app that came with the phone?
If so, I'd advise that you delete those temporarily to see if the problems stop. If not, go into your Application settings, select Manage Apps, and see which ones have access to your SMS messages - those could potentially affect your texting and be causing this problem. Delete those for a while and see if the problem still persists. If you just cannot get it to stop, take it to a Verizon store and show them what's happening, and they'd be happy to send you a warranty replacement X.

I've always used the stock messaging app. I checked through my apps and the only two that seem to have SMS privileges are Facebook and Google Translate. I've had both since I got my phone back in October.

Almost exactly the same problem, but, my phone does not ring, it just turns the screen on... every text message I get. 7+ messages for several tweets and texts. It also when screen turns on shows the media volume bar which goes up and down by itself..
Multiple text issue has been happening for the whole 2 years i've had my phone.
Did factory reset, didnt install ANYTHING back on the phone and STILL Multiple random texts.
It stopped for a while and now, as of about a month ago is happening again.
Plus the new fun issues of it automatically opening my email when the phone is just sitting there and then it will open text messages automatically.
Also, the speaker isnt working on random calls in the areas when I have 4 bars even..
DROID X STINKS.

Garbage answer! I did a master reset once, at some Verizon dweeb's strong urging. What they neglect to tell you beforehand is that you can restore your apps and emails, but they claim to have no way to restore your text messages. That sounds like complete malarkey to me! I'm sure if Homeland Security came a-knockin' on their door asking for your all your texts, they'd somehow magically be able to provide them to the MiB.
This was a major annoyance since I do a lot of communicating via text. I lost a ton of contact information, directions, you name it. Heck, I even lost a recipe my sister sent me. Oh and by the way, the master reset did nothing to correct the problem I was having at the time. A master reset should be your very last resort to any problem, but these VZW techs seem to be very quick to recommend it for a wide variety of problems.

There are several apps in the Play Store that will backup text messages and restore them after a reset. I have personally used one for almost two and half years through four android phones, two carriers and numerous factory resets.
I'm most definitely NOT a VZW employee. If a post answered your question, please mark it as the answer.

Yep, I am aware of that now. I went looking for one immediately after that debacle. I chose GO SMS Pro. The bad thing is that I actually like the simple stock Motorola texter. So I use that and have GO SMS storing texts in the background.

You can use an application like this one and still use the stock text message application.

I know a lot of the times, getting multiple texts is an issue on the sender's side. I get it from time to time, mostly with Verizon and Cricket users. I've also been told I've sent the text to someone 2 or 3 times, without knowing.

I cleared my cache so I'm just waiting to see if I get anymore duplicates. I receive them from multiple senders, including the MLB updates that I get.

It appeared to work at first but I once again started receiving duplicate text messages. It's not as frequent and, so far, I've only received two duplicates (as opposed to the four I was receiving). Any other suggestions?

Very possible. I haven't ever experienced this with my X, though. I literally have never had a duplicate text that wasn't purposely resent by the sender.

Mine is an X and I am having this problem with increasing frequency. Yesterday recvd msg from my wife two times in two minutes and same message again 2:15 later and again nine hours later and again this morning call it 22 hours after first was sent. We're both Verizon, but she is using an older Motorola V750 -- she does not have the duplicate message problem (yet).
I also received a message from a non-verizon contact three times this morning: 10:35 am, 11:01 am, and 12:44 pm.
These people are NOT sending the messages multiple times.

I have a Droid 2, not X, but have had this problem ever since the gingerbread update. My system version is 4.5.601 A955. It happens a lot from my husband, who is also Verizon, Samsung fascinate. Today I got a message at 4:10 3 times, then again 3 minutes later, and another came through 3 times at 8:37, 8:41, and 8:55. But I have other texts from him and other people that did not repeat. Between my battery that can't last 4 hours and this, I wish I never did the update.

I have the Droid 2 as well and I have this same issue with multiple copies of text messages. It is not from a specific carrier, or person. I had this issue with Blackberry a couple years ago and it seemed to go away on it's own. This has definitely started since the Gingerbread update (which I did not have the option of canceling). So far, most everything on my phone is worse with this update. I use the stock text application on Android and my phone is not rooted. If someone determines a cause and/or fix, please post the answer. This is ridiculous from one of the nation's largest carriers
