If an MP3 file is attached to a text message, can it be saved for a ringtone in my Droid X? If so what are the steps to do that? Thanks so much for any help in this.
Oh yes then I would like to have someone lead me through assigning the ringtone to a specific contact. Thanks again.

Saving mp3s from text messages
You should be able to long press on a text message attachment and select an option to save it to your sd card. I haven't had a chance to test this, though because I get text messages through google voice and they don't allow attachments. But this is how it always worked on my G1 (another android phone) so it should be the same.
Saving individual ringtones to contacts
If you want to assign individual ringtones for your contacts. Go to the android marketplace and download "Ringo Lite". It's free and very easy to use. Simply select each contact and choose the ringtone from your list. There are other ways to do this but this is by far the easiest and the paid version even lets you create individual notifications for text messages.
Using (almost) any sound file for a ringtone
Rings Extended is another great free app that allows you more control over assigning ringtones. Make it your default option when you're assigning ringtones. Want to use your favorite mp3 for an alarm? Want to use a notification sound for a ringtone? This app lets you do all that.
Other tips and apps
Something else worth mentioning is that if you save a folder to the sdcard called "ringtones", any mp3s you save this folder will appear in your ringtones list. This also works if you makes folders called "alarms" and "notifications". Make sure they are root folders.
One of my favorite free apps is called Ringdroid. It allows you to edit mp3s saved on your phone into short song clips that you can then save as ringtones. Handy for picking out the best part of a song to use as a ringtone.
Hope this helps. Power to the Droid!

Don't know about opening and saving a ringtone through a text message but a really good free app in the Market for LOTS of ringtones is called "RingTone." You can download the ringtone and then save it to specific contacts right through the app. Very easy!
