Is Data Plan required for devices with Wi-Fi?

I've been checking out commercials about the new Motorola Droid.  Judging from previews looks like its something I want.  Besides, my upgrade is coming up in December. I see that this device will have Wi-Fi.  I am wondering, since it has wi-fi, does verizon still require appropriate data plan? if yes, what is the point of wi-fi if you will pay for data anyways? I love verizon, but if thats the case, maybe I should stick with att. Waitin for your responses, thank you!

All smartphones require a data plan.  This was implemented awhile back so everything going forward requires it.  The only way you "might" be able to circumvent it is if perhaps you bought a phone off ebay at full price and activated it on the network.  But anything you get subsidized is going to have this requirement, no exceptions.  Wi-fi is a higher speed alternative connection that's not as seamless as the cellular network, but it would permit you to surf the web faster, download updates, apps, whatever, at faster speeds and with less power draw on your battery.  It's really just an accessory feature to supplement your cellular data capabilities.  Having it also allows you to use your cell phone as a wireless access point (serving as a bridge between the cellular network and your laptop via wi-fi).  Hope this answers your question.

And btw, it's not a Verizon exclusive policy.  AT&T implemented the same policy as of Sept 6th.  If you get a new smartphone with AT&T, you're gonna run into the same problem.

Thank you, this definitely clears up some issues associated with data plans. Thank you again.

If it says a certain phone is compatible with your plan, doesnt it mean you dont have to pay extra every month?

Because it says the BB Storm 2 is compatible, and yet its a wifi smart phone. And i dont have any data plan right now
