Issues with Incredible 2 contacts, HTC Sync

One of our employess recently switched to an HTC Incredible 2 and we have had major issues with his phone contacts from day one.  We use Outlook to manage contacts (no Exchange Server) and installed the HTC Sync program (and checked for latest version) on his computer so we could sync his contacts and calendar with his new phone.  We do not use Facebook or Google Contacts.  Verizon replaced the first Incredible 2 after a week when the camera stopped operating, and the second Incredible 2 is having the same issues with phone contacts as the first.

First issue is with the automatic linking of contacts.  We do not want the phone to do this, as it has linked contacts that should not be linked together and has corrupted the contact information on several contacts by copying company names, phone numbers, etc from one contact to another.  Syncing the phone with Outlook corrupted the entries in the Outlook contact list as well.  However, I cannot find any information on how to turn the automatic linking off.  I would appreciate if someone could list the instructions on how to do this.

When we got the replacement phone,  I did not turn on the automatic backup and deleted all of the contacts from the online backup (emptied the trash so nothing should have been stored), I manually when through Outlook to correct all of the corrupted contacts (which took days), and synced the phone. This seemed to work, even though some contacts on the phone were autolinked (I unlinked them manually).  I then set up the automatic backup and everything got messed up again.  It stated that it was backing up the contacts (so far so good), but then said that it was downloading contacts (which there shouldn't have been any to download, since I had deleted the old backup).  By the time the autobackup was done about half of the contacts on the phone had been deleted.  I tried to resync with Outlook to copy the contacts that had been deleted back to the phone (had HTC sync set up so that the PC data took precedence over phone data) but instead of copying the contacts back to the phone, it deleted the contacts from Outlook!  So now, the online backup, the phone, and Outlook all seem to agree, but half of the contacts are gone (I'm talking about hundreds of contacts!!!!)  Is this an issue with HTC Sync, the phone, or with Verizon's automatic backup?  I probably can get the contacts back from the computer backup of the outlook file, but I don't have time to go through this again if the contacts get screwed up again.

Is there a better program than HTC Sync to sync the Incredible 2 with Outlook?  Has anyone else had issues with the automatic backup and android (We used Blackberries for years before this and never had trouble with the online backup.) Any tips or suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks.
