Whenever I touch the screen on my Droid X, the lights under the four hard buttons light up. This is usually fine. However, I wanted to try out the Kindle app and do some reading in the dark before going to sleep. I dimmed the Kindle app to a level that was comfortable in the dark (black background with gray text) and thought I was set. Not so! Whenver I swipe the screen to turn the page, those darn lights under the hard buttons light up. They are very bright in the and it makes it too uncomfortable to read in the dark.
How can I turn off those lights?

Same here.
Temporary solution:
I keep a 3" strip of black electrical tape on the back of my phone to cover the buttons at bedtime for reading

The buttons, as you found out, light up automatically whenever the screen is touched. I do not believe there is a way you can either dim them or shut them off entirely. As the previous message stated, you're only option is to put some sort of dark material over them, black electrical tape, a piece of dark cloth, or something of that nature.
