Droid X with Gingerbread OTA update.
1) Go to Location & security settings
2) Disable Google location services (don't want to use wifi)
3) Enable Standalone GPS services (this is standard GPS satellites)
4) Enable VZW location services (this SHOULD be cell-tower triangulation)
5) Go inside
6) Open up Google Maps, or any other app that needs location information.
7) The phone has no idea where it is
😎 Go outside
9) GPS kicks in, phone tracks location to GPS accuracy
10) Disable Standalone GPS services (leaving VZW location services as the only selected option)
11) Google Maps now claims that I must enable at least one type of location services option and that it can't work until I do
So, in conclusion, VZW location services seems to be completely broken. The phone doesn't even know what state it is in unless I go outside and use GPS satellites. The "assisted" GPS is nonfunctional. My old Touch Pro 2 could get my location to ~2km accuracy when I was indoors. The Droid X can't do it at all. In addiction, it seems as if the entire VZW location services option is broken in the Location & security settings meny.

I have had no problems with my X. I get satelites in my family room (my garmin gets nothing there). I use the google location services with GPS. I keep verizon disabled. I thought that was for using verizon navigation so I never enable it and everything works fine.

You are probably getting your location from the Google services when you are inside. I prefer not to use Google because I usually keep Wifi off, and I don't want them to track me.

"I prefer not to use Google because I usually keep Wifi off, and I don't want them to track me."
wi-fi doesn't need to be selected to use google tracking.
fwiw:
google tracking alone shows me within 300yds of location, inside or out.
in phx & other big cities, lots of towers/good triangulation if using verizon location only, if you live out in-the-middle of no-where, you might not have a lot of towers to fix your position.

I live in a city, plenty of towers. It puzzles me that you can get a fix using VZW location only. On my phone, apps will not even attempt to detect location if VZW is the only one I have enabled. When I get some time, I am going to head to a verizon store and attempt the same on a demo Droid X.

I said satellites not towers. I had six satellites in my family room. The gps on the x is fantastic. I have used in on 5 of my excursions into the high peaks in the adirondacks where there is NO service and it worked better than my garmin legend which I had on also.

My location services all work well indoors. I've never had an issue with Google Map's indoors. My HTC Touch Pro 2 was really good too, in that regard. I wish that phone were still offered with Android and a better camera and a capacitive touch screen. It was my favorite phone of all the ones I've had.

Thanks for your inquiry. For Google Maps, you will need to turn on Google location services. You do not need wifi to turn on this setting. If you are using a Verizon application, it will use the Verizon location services.
