Moto Droid - only 50 MB internal phone storage after factory reset?

On Thursday my 2.01 Droid started "force close" on most apps I tried running. A reboot caused it to alternate between the Motorola logo and a blank screen continuously (continuous reboot).

I took it to the Verizon store and they did a Factory Reset and reloaded all of the apps. When I got home I noticed it only had 35 MB on internal phone storage where it used to have 180 MB+. On Saturday it couldn't download anything from Market. All downloads just said "Starting download" forever. I read it might be tied to a Google Talk problem, which I've never used. When i try to start Google Talk it opens and immediately closes.

The 2.1 update came in and while it fixed the Google Talk problem, it still only had 30 MB or so of internal memory storage. When you look at Managing Applications, they total up to around 20 MB (no, not 200, 20). The Internal Memory Widget says I have 225 MB of apps installed.

So I tried a Factory Reset and activated the phone, at the first time I could, I checked "Settings - SD card and phone storage" and it showed I only had 50 MB in "Internal phone storage - Available space". Yes, that was before it downloaded anything.

Today it started giving me a "Low on space" notification and it's only got 14 MB free. I did another Factory Reset and this time it showed only 41 MB of internal phone storage right after the activation. And Talk just opens and closes immediately.

So I'm thinking this is a hardware failure and I should ask for a replacement device tomorrow. If anyone has another idea on how to fix this, that would be appreciated to save the trip to the store.

Thanks,

Ray
