Motorola DROID Lock Ups

Over the last week I've had six full lock ups on the Motorola Droid.  Each time the only way to recover the device was to pull the battery.  When the device recovered, the battery was at least 60% charged.  I know several people that purchased Motorola Droids in the first few days and none of them are having the same lock up issues.  I have only loaded three applications. Crazy!

Suggestions? Back to the Verizon Store?

I suggest doing a Factory Reset first, then see if it continues to hold up.

If not keep it, if it's persistant return it to the store immediately.

I'm not ready to pull the "Factory Reset" trigger yet.  This even though there have been several more lock ups in which I had to pull the battery to restore the phone.

I heard from a source that there is a MAJOR OTA update coming that will fix many of the Lock up and Reset Issues.  The firmware is in the final stages of TA at Verizon.  ETA is TBD.

However if Verizon is reading...  It better be soon!!

I recommend using the "AppManager" to store all your preferences and THEN try Factory Reset in the

SETTINGS, PRIVACY, (make sure 'Back up my settings' is checked) and then hit  "Factory data rest" and follow prompts.

It is a little scary the first time, but if you follow the directions, you will not lose very much information.

Refer to this site and type "performing initial activation - droid" in the 'search box' to walk you through.

Good luck.

If that does not work, bring it back for technical assistance.

I've been having the same issue with my phone and i've had the phone 5 days.  It locks up and i have to pull the battery.  If i do a factory reset, will i lose all the apps that i downloaded as well as ringtones and stuff?

the apps that you purchased are recorded in your gmail acct.  they should reload after you reconnect back to your gmail account.  if not you need to open each mail and initiate the redownload.  but with that mail you will not be subject to a recharge.

the only draw back is that you will have to re-find the free apps you downloaded.  those are not saved and you will have to re-install manually.

if your ringtones are saved on your sd card, the factory reset will not affect it.

try and find "MyBackup". its free for 30 days, do that if it will bring you peace of mind.

however, if the lockups still occur, return it and exchange it.

I have also had those problems and I have had the phone for 3 days. Its happens to me when I am on the phone and the other caller hangs up the phone goes to the black screen of death. I brought mine into the store and they said if I couldn't duplicate issue they weren't going to exchange it. Obviously my luck I couldn't. SUX. I dont know if it is the software or a bad phone. They should take your word for it especially if you onlly had the phone for 3 days. Hopefully something will happen for this issue. Let me know if you find anything out.

black screen of death?  are you sure that your phone just didn't timeout? all you have to do is press the power button.

Wont exchange it unless you duplicate the issue?  you need to go back, return it, and go somewhere else that will allow you to exchange it (best buy would never do this, they exchange it if you have the slightest of problems).  under no circumstance should you tolerate that behavior. you are the customer. the customer is always right.  you have a 30 day grace period to return the cell if you dont want it.

i would go back when it is busy (when there are alot of people waiting behind you for service), repeat the problem, when they say the same excuse, make an uproar.  call it unbelievable or something.  tell them other business have always allowed you to exchange the phone if something was wrong (and say this loud). and if they arent going to do something that other companies do, you want to return the phone and that you plan on taking your business somewhere else permanantly and you have the right mind to post their business on this forum to warn others to never come here again.

(make sure you have some product in your hand like you are going to purchase them.  if they see them, they might do it because you plan to buy more of their products.  and when they do exchange it, tell them you changed your mind about the additional purchases and thank them for exchanging the phone) LOL!!!

My wife has been having the same issue with lock ups and she has only had the Droid for a day.  It mainly locks up in stand-by mode.  Pressing the power button does nothing, still get the black screen.  It appears that the phone shut down.  The only way to get it back on is to pull the battery.  It will also sometimes lock up when trying to start one of he free downloaded apps, and frequently powers off and back on when trying to start one of the apps.   Does it sound like a software problem or a bad phone??
