Motorola Droid ~ Callers can't hear clearly

I finally figured out why callers on the other side can't hear clearly, though I hear them great!  It's poor design!

The keyboard closes on top of over half of the microphone! The top cover is designed to fall slanted on all sides, which gives it a nice appearance but very poor performance.  I tried talking with a Verizon agent by opening the keyboard and holding the phone, a very inconvenient approach, and my cheek touched the screen and hanged the call.   In addition, you have to hold the phone so the microphone is just right by your mouth, and even then, the sound comes out muffled; another inconvenience.  I wonder if they actually do consumer testing before they come out with the final product. And, I wonder if they actually heed the comments and concerns of the testers.

There is a fix that will help immensely. Enter your setup area in your Droid phone.  How to enter that area is available on the web. Follow the instructions closely. Once in there don't change anything but this.. ( CHOOSE option 4  ) it's called VOCODE you will see 3 options 13K, EVRC and EVRC-B.  Choose EVRC-B it offers the best call quality. Exit and the Phone will reboot. The call outgoing quality will increase dramatically!  ALL DROIDS are factory set to EVRC. I almost took my phone back over this at least now everyone can understand me. I kno it worked for me :smileywink:

fyi debbie......i would copy the instructions to do this to your phone (i emailed it to myself). if you find yourself in an area that you get very little or NO reception, you'll need to switch it back. EVRC-B isn't supported in many places. it's easy enough to do, but i was afraid i'd forget how and 3 months from now i'd be somewhere that EVRC-B isn't supported and have no signal.

pm....not sure. i have an incredible and the way to do it is call ##778. select "edit mode." enter the pasword "000000." and in mine it is under "cdma settings." you make the changes described above and touch "menu" and select "commit changes."

AGAIN....i have the incredible, but maybe you can access it the same way???? i also changed it to evrc-b and it appears to be much more clear.

##7764726 works on both phones the same way.  There are somethings on the incredible you get to on one menu some you get to on the other.  the longer one has more options but not necessarily more useful ones.

This is wonderful info but I don't know how to get to my setup area on my droid lol How do you get there to change this code? I dialed some number but it asked for a SPC password? I am so lost, just want people to be able to hear me clearly, thanks!

Here is how to do this on a Moto DROID.  I tried it and it worked successfully.

On your keypad, input ##7764726.
It will ask for password, which is 000000 (6 zeros).
Select "04 Vocode".
Select EVRC-B.
Press Apply.

Your DROID will then resart.

That's it!

As mentioned, if you NEED to change this back to the default, keep this info handy.

Where do I find the setup area on line.  Is it the tool app?

Has anyone had any problems with update crashing the phone.  Having to have a new phone sent to me?

They recalled the phone.  They said this is not right and will send me a new one, I mean this combined with not being able to use Visual Voice mail or the myverizon app..

I could not find out how to get into 'settings' to reset so that people can hear me more clearly on the Motorola Droid.  Can you give directions on how to change that?  Thanks.

I tried This with my Droid and now it seems to be worse than before. I've replaced It 3 times already. Any other suggestions. I'm about ready to cancel Verizon all together with all the issues I've had with this.
