This is probably a dumb question. Does anyone know how to increase the volume so that when the phone rings, the ringtone comes out of the main speaker and not the receiver? This also goes for watching video's and music. My ringer volume and my media volume are set to the highest but the sound is still very low and only comes out of the receiver. Just to clear this up a bit by receiver i mean the piece that you put to your ear when talking on the phone.
Thanks!

I have the same problem, this is driving me nuts. I am not dumb when it comes to smart phones. I own or have owned Treo, blackberry, and the Iphone. This is driving me nuts. I also learned the the sales person who sold me the phone dosent now how to fix this problem either. Come on people. This is obviously a glitch. FIX IT

I had the same issue and I simply rebooted my phone to solve it. To reboot I held down the power key on the upper right side of the phone. A menu came up and one of the options was to turn the phone off. After it powered off, I hit the same button to turn it back on. It took a few seconds to finish the reboot. After that, the sound came out of the external speaker instead of the earpiece. I do believe this is a glitch and they will have to build a patch.
I hope this helps.

Had the same problem the first day and a reboot fixed it. It's very worrisome that I had to rest it after about 6 hours because of this. Hope this doesn't happen often.

Same problem after about 3 1/2 days. How do you report these to Verizon so someone will do something about them. Is there an error reporting site? If not there should be especially with a new phone.

Same thing. Use droid to play music in the car with an aux cable than unplug it to have the sound not work right. They should have an update or something. If android is really linux base they should have a way to restart the sound service without rebooting the phone.

I've had the same volume problem, but I have never plugged headphones into my droid. I have turned off my speaker, used vibrate, but no headphones, no bluetooth earpiece.

ran into this problem one day as well, scouring the internet, i've seen this problem listed here and over in the motorola community forums. everyones situation seems to be different, but the bottom line is it looks like bug in the OS thats causing the issue. For some it only happens once, for others they have to reboot their phone everyday, multiple times a day. sucks, i knew i should have waited on this **bleep** phone. hope they fix it.

I had the same problem, and turning the phone off and on again worked. I haven't used headphones yet, so I'll have to see if that messes it up too.

Yup. I had the same problem after 25 hours! The reboot did work for me. I'll be checking back here for other "glitches". Keep posting them!

i had the same problem, and a reboot fixed it for me as well... luckily this phone reboots fairly quickly, otherwise this problem could get annoying if it continues to occur

I had the same problem also (fixed on reboot), and it seemed to me it was caused by plugging in headphones. After I removed the headphones, it continued to send sound to the receiver and not the speaker. In other words, it routed all sound to the headphones, and never released it when the headphones were removed, which resulted in the sound coming out of the earpiece. Can anyone else verify the use/removal of headphones as the trigger/cause?

I'm in the same boat. It seems the device doesn't revert back to main speaker when disconnected from the headphone jack.

The reBoot is the answer and the cause is from when the battery life gets low (less than 20%) the phone shuts down the external speaker to conserve power. I have had it happen twice, original charge and one night when I let it get low on purpose, but have had no problems since I started maintaining my battery levels better.

...That is NOT the *only* reason the Droid diverts the ringer, and other expected external sounds to the earpiece, but there are many other causes, and some not so apparent.
1)Using headphones, and unplugging from the earphone jack can cause it to keep playing through the earpiece
2)receiving a call while in navigation mode causes the ringer and navigation voice to divert to earpiece
3)Just letting it sit on your desk causes it to divert to earpiece
The ONLY way I can tell I have an incoming call or a text message is if it vibrates.
This is a major bug, and they'd better fix it fast. I can understand the other minor stuff; but missing phone calls and other communication based notices is not acceptable.

I got the DROID the day it came out and have not had any issues with the volume/speakers. I have not used the audio jack but do use the phone and a bluetooth headset frequently, along with an occasional use of the speaker phone. Feeling pretty lucky but betting the audio jack switching has something to do with the problems.

I'm having a similar problem. The sound is coming out both speakers, but it's still very quiet. I've checked the main volume and the media volume, and they're both cranked up all the way. After reading this thread, I rebooted the phone and it's as loud as ever, now. (When I say loud, I mean I can drive down the interstate and the phone doesn't need to be plugged into my stereo. I just lay it on the seat next to me and it blares loud enough to fill the car.)
Since it has the same fix, I'm guessing we share a common problem.
