Can the contacts be sorted by last name. I have over 300 and don't always remember the first name. Can't find any settings for allowing this. Thanks.

I am pretty sure this would work. You can just put the persons last name first then their first name. Just go to edit contact and put the last name first.

For 300+ contacts? Thanks, but no thanks. That is not a real solution. Almost all contact apps have the ability to sort and display by last name.

I agree that you should be able to sort by last name. I am hoping this gets fixed in a future release. If you are not opposed to switching the first and last name fields around (other than the amount of tedious work involved), this might work.

  1. Go to Gmail and export your contacts in csv format.
  2. Open the file with Excel or Google docs.
  3. Switch the headings for First Name and Last Name and save to a new file to preserve the original as a back up.
  4. Back in Gmail select all contacts then click Delete contacts. You might want to wait for phone contacts to synch.
  5. In Gmail, import the file you saved in step 3.

I have not switched first and last names around in my contacts but I did use a similar procedure to reload contacts after cleaning up some issues when I first set up my phone.

Thanks for the suggestion, but it is way too much work for something that is standard in almost all contact apps. This really needs to be fixed, and I am surprised that no one has complained abut this before. It’s not enough for Google to have a contact app that syncs with others, but they need to have basic common sense features.

I agree with you that there should be a way to sort contacts by last name or even company name for that matter, but a quick work around is to simply press the search button once your in your contacts list and type in the last name that you are looking for.  The phone will then give you a scrollable list of all the people with that last name.  For most entries you probably wouldn't even have to type the whole name.  On the other hand, you might also get contacts that have first names that are common to last names (ie. Lewis), but even with 300+ contacts it should narrow down your search quite a bit.
