Hello nascrnanna88. I have read your post and understand your issue with the mute button on your device which keeps coming on during calls. If a factory reset did not work for you, you can try doing a hard reset on your device. Here are the steps.
From the home screen, touch the applications tab(located at the bottom of the display).
Touch Settings.
Touch Privacy.
Touch Factory Data Reset.
Touch Reset Phone. If presented, enter the current passcode or draw the unlock pattern.
Touch Erase Everything.

Verizon's standard solution to every problem seems to be "Do a hard reset". I think they are required to parrot the company mantra, no deviations.
The problem MAY be as simple as your cheek pressing too hard against the screen and coming in contact with the mute button. Try holding the phone a little less tightly to your face. I've found those screen buttons can sometimes be very sensitive to the slightest touch or warmth.

It is either the proximity sensor is messed up or the shadows tells the screen to come on, and your cheek hits the button.
If you think it's the proximity sensor vzw will do a reset of your phone first, but just let them do it.
