NOT happy with the updates

the phone can no longer be set to not sleep.  lost all e-mail access unless you link to g-mail.  Lost web page links.  Took an hour to upload the update and drained to (double) battery to nothing.  If this is a Google control... I will be out of here and I have been faithful customer for many year.

I am so sorry to hear that you were not liking the updates to the Bionic, Dizi. There were many improvements that came along with it, so I am a bit shocked to hear that you were not liking it. You pointed out not being about to set the phone to "not sleep." What did you mean by this? Was this about the screen never timing out? Also, could you elaborate more about your other concerns? Having Android be Google based, many of the functions do require a Google account. And also the update was quite large and it is normal that the battery drained a lot when it went through. We don't want to loose you so please let us know how we can help further!

Thanks!

When talking on the phone screen goes black.  Then you cannot perform any functions except to hang up the call with the power button.  Also phone shuts down and literally reboots back to Motorola screen and droid start-up on a whim, including in the middle of taking a picture or sending a message or trying to conduct business.

For what it's worth you can turn off the "power button ends call" option and this will allow you to use the power button to turn the screen back on. I never use that power button to end call option.

To turn it off go in to settings-->accessibility-->un-check "power button ends call"

Oh now you've just ruined his 'Verizon is evil" rant with an actual solution. I'll suspect he'll leave anyways( good riddance I say ) and of course he'll be back when he realize his "issues" follow him to whatever carrier he goes with.

have you tried a soft reset and/or clearing the system cache?

Soft reset

Pull the battery while it's on and then hold the power button for 20 sec

Put battery back in and restart device

Clear system cache

Power down phone

Hold volume up/down & power simultaneously

Use volume down to navigate to 'Recovery', use volume up to select

Should see screen with triangle and exclamation point next to an Android

Press volume up/down simultaneously

Use volume rocker to navigate to 'wipe cache' and use power button to select

Once finished, use volume rocker to navigate to 'reboot system now' and use power button to select

I performed the ICS update 3-4 days ago.  However, I am experiencing the following issues. Do you know if clearing system cache, or the hard reboot (I did this one) will resolve any of them?  Note that I performed the system cache clear before moving forward with the ICS update.  Had no issues during the ICS update either.

  1. Often getting the pop up message for many apps: "<app> is not responding.  Wait or close?"
  2. Phone will freeze while doing something, whether it is typing text, a web address, entering a new contact, etc.  I let it be for quite a while, several minutes, but it never recovers on its own after that time.  So I have to reboot (thank goodness ICS reboot time is wayyy faster than GB reboot).

I do not get any auto reboots, noticeable battery drain (vs. GB), or other issues posters are having.

Thanks in advance for any info.

I like your user name!

Yes, after such a big update as ICS, clearing the system cache after the installation will remove any leftover bits of GB code, so I'd suggest doing that and hopefully that'll clear up your issues.  If not, then you may want to do a factory reset (be sure to back everything up first, and I'd remove the SD card).

Thanks, and thanks for the quick reply. However, I do hate FDR as the final answer. Is it true that FDR resolves ALL issues everyone is having from the ICS update?  I would love to know before I press the big red button. Smiley Happy  Thanks again.

I can't guarantee that an FDR will be the mother of all corrections, but it is often recommended after a major OS update such as ICS.  Yes, it's a pain, but I suppose one way of looking at it is ... if you've tried everything else and that's the only option left, ya may as well bite the bullet, so to speak.

3-4 days into the update? Tell me more about the situation. Do you have a lot of pics, music, videos on the phone? Have you disabled apps that you do not use (this will help the OS and help stop Freezing.

So if you have a lot of Pics, Music and Video on the phone, then ICS will take some time optimizing these and all of your apps to work with ICS. This can take up to 72 hours to do but when it is done then the OS itself needs to run and finish setting itself up and this is only done based on how you use the phone and which apps you use and which you do not use.

Turn off and remove any and all Task Killers and Battery Optimizers (not Battery graphs or tools to show you battery usage), but Battery Optimization apps.

The phone fine tuning itself can also do a lot of strange things but mostly any hangups are from incompatible apps or 2 or more apps competing for the same tasks and the phone will learn how to handle these things (competing apps).

The phone tuning itself can take 5-7 days of good solid use how you will use it. After this time I would do the Cache Clear.

Do you have a good AV app on the phone? Lookout and AVG make and offer for free some of the best. What apps have you installed on the phone?

I did have a lot of photos.  But it has been about 4 days now. So I went ahead and cleared system cache and performed a FDR.  Now, when I go to Play and try to update an app or install a small app (400kb), it just keeps showing downloading and nothing appears in the notification bar as it did before. Does it take a while before I can update or install an app after the FDR?  I don't recall that happening on previous large OS updates with my other Droids.  I'm hoping it's just a waiting game.  I also did a 2nd FDR just in case something didn't go right on the first one.

Any idea why apps won't update/install?

It should not take that much time to be able to install anything from Play. The only delay would really be if you have an old version of Play on the phone itself, it will take a few tries to get Play to update itself. Do you have this issue when connected with Wifi?

The only thing with doing the FDR is the phone is still going to try to optimize itself so it will be a few days for the functional speed to pick up but that should have little impact on installing from Play.

Try this. Go to http:\\play.google.com and sign in there. You can install apps to your phone from this location and it will push to your phone. I have found this to be faster then trying to go through Play on the phone at times. If you are able to push apps from the computer to the phone it will trigger the newest version of Play to also be loaded on the phone which may solve the issue.

I rebooted a couple of times, logged into Google Talk to confirm that worked (read that from another forum), logged into Google+, then after hitting Install and stopping and re-starting, nothing. So I happened to have backed up .apk files, so I installed a couple of those. I also tried a push install from my PC to install an app on my cell. After that, Google Play decided to "install" those same apps, and then the gateway to Google Play downloading was opened up!  So problem resolved somehow.  Maybe it was just waiting time for things to catch up syncing. Not sure what was the key, since I tried so many things. I just wanted to avoid FDR for a 4th time. Smiley Happy  Thanks for the replies.

I've been having major problems with my phone since the update, so I just did the soft reset and cache. I don't have the battery saver like before the update, is there any way to still reserve the battery. I do have everything turned off (wifi, bluetooth, etc) also constantly use the advanced task killer. My phone has been totally crashing and will be just black and not usuable at all since the update. It has to stay on the charger constantly and then only says it's like 5%, the most battery it has had is 40%, but it will say that, then 0%, not charging at all, have used 3 different chargers to see if that was the problem, not. As soon as you remove from charger battery life shows red and to put on charger. I hate my phone now! When I turn the phone off, it doesn't shut off but just turns itself right back on, has a mind of it's own know. Hopefully doing this soft reset will help.

What upset the most about the update is that i went from having long battery life to having no battery life....The bionic had a really great battery saver and now its gone....i used to be able to charge my phone in the morning for an hour and would have a full battery and would not have to charge until the next morning without having to cut off my data.....now im charging twice a day, having to cut of my data to conserve battery. i would like to go BACK to the old operating system where i would not battery life issues....

I had terrible battery life for the first 4 or 5 days of the ICS install on my phone.  Part of this is all the extra playing I did on my phone trying to find things and how things worked. But it also takes the OS time to learn what needs to be on and what does not need to be on.

Disable the apps you do NOT use. I also disable Smart Actions as it used 4-6% of my battery life. When I disabled it, SA used nothing.

B33 has a Battery Guide that will also help.

Even if you do nothing after 5-7 days the battery will pick back up again (after the phone optimizes itself, and learns what should be on or off etc...

I agree ever since my update to ics it sucks.  My phone is slow like super slow.  Sending and recieving txts are like being on dailup.  I was so pissed when all the other phone got the update.  This is the second bonic that i had to replace because of a tethering issue and or no responsive.  I am not returning the phone at all i will pay the early termation fee and say hell with verizon at this point.  I am suck of having issues with phones.  Either they will do two things one send me a newwwwwww phone not a refurbised phone or two give me a choice on a another phone of equal value or give me the two upgrade to the iphone 5s i would rather have an apple product now then a pos phone that is slow then 2003 apple with mac os 10.4.11.  I would rather throw the phone back at them and say keep the dam thing.  I am not happy with the update i am not happy with the slowness of the phone, it starts typing in stuff during texts, and it just all pos.

I have similar problems with email.  I have an Earthlink (POP) account that has worked fine since I bought the Bionic in June. Now suddenly all mails Sent from Bionic have disappeared. Additionally, all the contact/addresses I have used (over 200 of them) have also disappeared. Which means the Display Suggested Address brings up zilch.  In fact, even though I have that feature turned ON, and I have sent out a few new emails, those few addresses I hand-entered still do not show up when I try to send another email to that same person.

To be clear, this has not screwed up my actual Earthlink webmail -- the contacts are still there, accessible from my computer. And as far as I can tell no emails have been deleted off of Webmail -- though they might have been if I hadn't just accessed the Earthlink account on my computer before downloading this Android update on my phone, since it seems the DEFAULT option is to delete from server as I delete from phone. All in all very thoughtless engineering.

As for the other changes in the update such as the double-touches now needed in various places, etc., I suppose one gets used to anything. But am I supposed to enter 200 addresses by hand now, and what would be the point if the Display Suggested Address feature doesn't work?

I have spent a good deal of time going through the new menus, a bunch of time on the Verizon/Bionic site and discussions. I don't see any solutions, or in fact any acknowledgement of the problem.  The only solution seems to be to switch my email to a google account, which is not my preference.  I did start a google account just to get the darn phone working (back in June), but I have never used it for emails. Yes, it's smoother than Earthlink, has better search capabilities, etc., but in a dozen years I have never been hacked or gotten a virus through earthlink, either on PC's or my new MAC. Call me superstitious, but on the other hand, at least once every 2 or 3 weeks I get spam (hopefully nothing worse) from friends whose gmail accounts have been hacked, some of whom are a lot more computer savvy than I am..

The only solution seems to be to switch my email to a google account, which is not my preference.  you do not have to use gmail for your e-mail if you don't want to

Your contacts are all still on your phone aren't they (only now under People)?
