I just got my new incredible for Xmas and need some advice on setting it up. I have found a lot of info online, and I think I am now a little more confused than when I started. I know that I need to get rid of some apps, etc to help with the battery life. Which pre-installed apps/programs do I have to keep and which ones can I get rid of? What would you do to the phone if you just took it out of the box? Preferences, recommendations, etc. I welcome any and all replies. Thanks and Happy Holidays.

Welcome to the world of confusion concerning the Incredible.
As for preinstalled apps, you can not delete them. They are part of the ROM. And you will see horror stories of these eating up your battery life. They do not. They will open in the background as parts of a program may be used for another app. they is how the Operating system which is based on Linux works.
If usable memory does become an issue, the OS will close apps/programs that are not necessary.
With the Froyo operating system, do not download an app killer as this program is a huge battery killer. The reason is, if you choose all these apps you see running to close automatically through the App Killer, what happens is the apps open, the AK sees them, so it closes them. Then they open again, the AP kills them....etc.
When wanting to conserve battery life, from the main screen, choose MENU>SETTINGS>ACCOUNTS&SYNC
Look and see what all is syncing. do you need everything listed to constantly sync???
Now look at your mail , new and weather programs, you can choose how often the device should look for updates. Do not use the uto setting for screen brightness. Manually set it to what is comfortable for you. I am at about 35-40%
I use K9 mail for all but the one Gmail account that is required for the phone. K9 works the best for me. Mail delivery is immediate and it does not affect my battery.
I keep WiFi on all the time as I am near a WiFi connection all the time. Others will say otherwise, but my battery life is longer leaving the WiFi switch on as I am near a connection.
I even keep GPS switched on all the time. it is not being used unless you see the satellite dish with the green bars radiating off of it.
Also I 'Bump charge' the battery. To do this, I charge my phone over night with it on. (I have an app to silence the phone for everything except contacts I choose) In the AM the phone shows it is charged, yet not quite fully. So I shut off the device while getting ready in the AM. You will see the charge light go amber again. In about 20-30 minutes you are now fully charged.
There is a TON of help on in this forum and many others much smarter than me who can offer more suggestions. But this is a start.
Any more questions feel free to add to this post.

I'm a new user (5 wks), first smartphone - if you have a Verizon store near you I would recommend going there, tell the salesperson what you want to use the phone for, i.e. type of apps, etc, and have them do initial settings for you & show you the basics. Pretty much you just have to use it (play with it) to find out what it can do. Again, have had mine for about 5 wks & every time I use it I learn something new.

there is also a user manual that you can download to your pc or straight to your phone. google it and look for a pdf file that you can download. it doesn't get into advanced stuff, but it covers the basics.
