To change the call ringtone for a contact: select the contact, press menu, options, ringtone.
For messaging: messaging, menu, settings, notification ringtone.
To have different messaging ringtones for each person, you'll have to download a messaging app. I believe Handcent is capable of doing this.
In order to have song ringtones, you will have to make the ringtone yourself either with an app or through a website and have it sent to your phone.

ur answer for the contacts helped me out a little but when i go to options then ringtones it just gives me the list of the default ringtones and it doesnt give me the list of my songs or the option to go look for the song i want to choose. Second the same happens with the sms the NEXTEL CHIRP sound i have it send from phonezoo.com as a mms if i save it it just goes to the music gallery as an mp3 song so how do i get it to be my ringtone FOR TEXT ? I made ringtones then emailed them to my phone. Whenever they downloaded, they would immediately start playing in the music player. (I'm not sure if this is the same for you.) In order to get those ringtones to appear amongst my ringtone options for calls and messaging, I had to set the song as my ringtone from the music player. I had to go through every ringtone I made and select "Set as ringtone." This would set the ringtone as the default ringer. However, once I had done this with all of my songs, they all appeared in the list of ringtones to choose from when selecting ringers for calls, messaging, and other various notifications.
I hope that makes sense. And I hope it helps. But that's what I had to do in order to have the option of using my ringtones.

I downloaded the free app called Ringo Lite. You can assign a ringtone text that way or you can assign a specific ringtone text to each contact. Works great.
