No 3G Network on Droid X

Since at least Friday night, I have been unable to access the 3G (or even 1X) networking. I was in Watertown MA when I noticed the lack of connectivity - I still haven't been able to connect at home in Somerville, or yesterday in Cambridge.

I got my Droid X the day they went on sale in July, got the 2.2 update a week ago. The only problem I had with the update was the missing Market app, which I resolved (with help from these forms) by installing the .azw file through Astro.  No problems for a few days after that, until Friday at a friend's house.

I have wifi off (no network problems with wifi enabled). No 3G/1X icon appears - I have 1-2 bars here at home, have seen 3-4 elsewhere but still no network. Some highlights from Status:

Network: Verizon Wireless

Signal strength: -81 dBm 0asu

Mobile network type: CDMA - EvDo rev. A

Service state: In service

Roaming: Not roaming

Mobile network state: Disconnected

Wi-Fi MAC address: Unavailable

I've done a few reboots, one time pulling the battery for a minute - no change. I have not (yet) resorted to Factory Data Reset, hoping to avoid that.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

I would start by putting the phone in airplane mode for a few moments and turn it off again.

If that doesn't try dialing *228 option 1 to reprogram the phone for the network.

I'm most definitely NOT a VZW employee. If a post answered your question, please mark it as the answer.

I had tried switching into airplane mode and back, no luck there. Just tried *228 as you suggested, also no luck. Rebooted after that just to make sure, still no network.

Bummer.

There's some settings in Data Manager (settings/Datamanager) that might need looking at, but I doubt that these are involved.

It's possible that the data radio (and if I understand these things correctly, there are separate radios for voice and data) has gone bad. If's there's nothing else to lose, you can try, as a last resort, the now-infamous and probably much hated, but vitally important "Factory Reset" and see if it helps (and it's possible), but I have a feeling that you are in for a warranty exchange on your phone.

Good luck,

If none of those things helped you may have a "hung data connection"  or at least that is what I've been told a few times.  I've had to call #611 to get it sorted out, after about 10 minutes on the phone with me they change some settings on their end, then had me reboot phone and everything was fine.

Alternatively, if you have your old vzw phone and it's a smartphone, you can reprogram it as your phone then back again.  This is supposed to sort this network problem without what could be 30 mins + on the phone.

OK, finally called tech support today. Went through *228, airplane mode->pull battery->reboot, factory data reset (ouch)..., etc. - no joy. Brought it in to a Verizon Wireless store, the woman there went through what looked like pretty much the same stuff - and voila! 3G again... I don't know exactly what went wrong or how she fixed it, but I'm back in business.

Interesting thread as I've also been having some strange issues going on with 3G suddenly not working for a brief time, I've done the *228 / 2  thing more than a few times - which never seems to help.

What happens on mine is that my 3G icon will be on with the up and down arrows alternating back and forth just fine -- getting my internet data, mail, twitter msgs, etc.   ....  I'll have 4 BARS also.  Then all at once, the arrows just both go grey and there's no more alternating at all of the arrows. At that time, all data transfer stops working and I begin to get errors to "retry later", etc. for mail, et al.  This condition will stay like this for a long time -- like maybe 15 mins or more. A reboot doesn't fix it. Toggling Airplane mode on/.off doesn't either.

Can someone tech-savy explain in some detail how 3G works?  Why would it just STOP working?

thanks in advance.

The phone tech I talked to yesterday said they had been having intermittent network problems since last Friday, how long have you seen your issue?

I think it's mostly been since last week ... I used to have the problem for very brief minutes but it would fix itself fairly quickly. Seems like over the last week it has gotten much worse though ... so hopefully that is the issue going on -- something at Verizon.

I hate to be a pessimist here, but I'd say both your issues are unlikely to be related from coast to coast if it were a network issue.

As for your 3G being out for the better part of a week, that would be huge money lost by VZW which would relate to a tower owner losing several thousand $$ a day.  When there are issues with the network they are resolved pretty quickly as time is money.
