Since the UPGRADE I keep getting a can not sync error too. Can not delete the account as I get the error message "An error has occured. The operation could not be completed. OK" not.
To delete the email account and keep the gmail account I did the following:
I was able to remove all data for application email by going to Apps, All, Email, clear data. This ended up removing the account. Note my google account had my email account synced too. I suspect that email and gmail setup for the same account might be an issue. I use gmail app for email on my phone as email app had issues under ICS. After clearing data I finally got notifications again from gmail when I sent myself a test message. At this point the can not sync error in the notification bar is gone. Hopefully it stays that way.
