Noticing an Increase in Battery Drain

droidcharge1996

Since Monday of this week I've been noticing an increase in the drain of my battery. I charge my phone every night and when I wake up in the morning I really don't use the phone all too much because I have to get ready for school. I close out of all apps in the task manager before entering school. When I leave school six hours later my phone is at half battery or even dead. This has never happened up until this week. The part that's confusing me is that there wasn't even an update. When I had my Samsung Fascinate there was a battery life issue after the froyo update. That's obviously not the case with my Charge since it came with froyo out of the box and hasn't been upgraded recently, so I was just wondering if anyone else was experiencing this and if they had any solutions. Thanks.

JerryF,

Thanks for your response i've tried this and it hasn't seemed to help, today I got home and had to plug the phone in to charge and it did something different  it decided to restore itself on me deleting everything on my phone. The phone has been basically perfect up until this week where it's began to act as if it had a mind of it's own. After I got the phone back to my regular settings, maybe five minutes passed before I heard it shut down and start back up and once again it restored itself. I don't know what's happening but it's very frustrating and is reminding me of a past problem I had with my Fascinate except the Charge hasn't even recieved a software update yet!

I wouldn't bother clearing all your apps, the ones the phone feels need to run will just be reloaded into memory, and this could possibly cause more battery drain.  Also keep in mind that 4G service uses a lot more battery than 3G.

As for the market, it should eventually update itsself.

demmo86rt,

Thanks for the response I'll definetely try to stop closing my apps in the task manger and see if that helps.  As for 4g I live in RI and we still don't have a 4g market so I don't think that's affecting it.  Also about the market before the phone restored itself I had the new android market and now after the phone restored itself I have the old version of the android market. It still hasn't updated back to the new version. Any way I can download it to my phone manually?

If you don't want to wait and see if the market auto-updates, I'm sure you could find the "market 3.1.5 apk" on the internet and install it yourself.  Any good site should have instructions for how to install it if you don't already know (it's actually super easy).

Also, I had a thought on your battery drain.  It is possible that it may be caoused by an app that is not behaving properly.  Try to think of any apps you may have installed (or any that may have updated) right before you started having the battery problems.  Unistall those to see if it helps.  Although, if you still had the battery drain issues after your phone reset itsself (and before you put apps back on), that may not be the case.

Hi droidcharge1996,

Upon review of your posts it appears that the issues outlined about battery and reboots are caused by a third party application conflict (as noted by other forum members). I'd recommend runnig your phone in Safe Mode to confirm a third party application conflict. Safe Mode temporarily disables all applications that have been installed via the Android Market. Performing this troubleshooting step is necessary to determine whether a 3rd party application is the cause of an Operating System / Application issue.

You can resolve third party application conflicts by removing the corrupted application. Since there is no way to identify the application causing the issues, I suggest removing all applications and adding one by one until you encounter issues again.

Additionally, you could do a Factory Reset to bring phone to original settings (as it was originally working properly) and then add your applications one by one. Please keep in mind that performing a hard reset will remove ALL data including the Google account, system data, application data, application settings, and downloaded applications.

Thanks for the reply I haven't installed any new apps I've had the same apps all along. So I don't think that's the problem. As for factory resets the phone's been doing that to itself everyday so I'm not sure that would solve anything.

I've noticed a similar drain in battery this week.  I think I've had a dozen apps that required updates, too, but nothing I can trace to a battery drain.  I've disabled Live Wallpaper, I've been turning off radios when I don't need them, but I seem to have about 25% battery left by about 5:00 every day, where I used to be in the 40-50% range.

Here's something I do to conserve battery power.  I read somewhere that if you are using an APP and leave it by pressing the Home screen button some APPs continue running BUT if you press the Back button the APP is turned off.

For example press the Camera app to start the camera.  Then press the Home button.  Now press Task Manager and you will see that the Camera APP is listed as still running.

Now do it again...Press the Camera APP to start it.  Then press the Back button.  Now press Task Manager and you will see that the Camera APP is NOT still running.  It was closed.

My habit is to always leave a running APP by pressing the Back button.

Droid.....try opening the market and then press the home button and let it sit st the home screen for several minutes then try opening the market again. I checked into this through the faq on the market itself and it said that if there is an update that this method of opening it up and pressing the home button and waiting several minutes on the home screen allows it to check for updates. Or you could try clearing the cache from the market, force closing it and then opening it again. This is the only info I have found to try to update the market other than waiting for it or manually installing the apk

Droid, I notice this with my Charge as well, the battery drain, not the resttting of itself. I close all applications and and clear the memory through the task manager. You get to the task manager by long clicking the "Home" button and touching Task Manager. Once in you can see any running applications, so close any of those. Then I go to Ram and touch the clear memory button. It always closes applications from there, and that helps my battery last longer when it starts draining faster.

Also make sure you don't have Skype running because I know that drains my battery if I leave that on at times as well.Skype does not show up in the Running Applications in Task Manager. You may look at other applications that you have signed into and need to sign out because they may not show up like Skype.

I don't know if this will help, but it has helped me in the past. Alos, good luck with the phone resetting. I don't have any major issues (Knock on wood), but I have some lag issues and minor things like that. Good Luck.

Some apps or a combo of to many apps can cause increased drain. Apps that close down runnign apps claiming to save battery life often cause faster drain, since they close the app and the system keep restarting it, and the cycle repeast.

I myself noticed a drain, afte doign a reset, removing apps on the EE4  updated phone (nto the test gingerbread unit that already has better battery life) I have much improved battery life. I can leave the phoen goign 24 hours without barely a drain at all. When those apps and app closers were running, even with data off, I would be down to 1/2 to 1/4 even idling most the day.

If this does not solve the issue. Then the battey could be weak. Common on many devices and phones using them. I had thaat issue with my previosu moterola until i got a good battery and did the conditioning.

An\ti virus apps wil lgreatly increase drain and performance decreases. They are not needed if you are getting aps soley from the market place. Exploits were fixed in EE4 and in the upcoming Gingerbread 2.3.4 and future update of 2.4.5. Common users don't need to worry. Those that Root their phone into superuser modes and get apps not reviewed and on the market palce need to be carefull if theey do not have the later builds of the os to prevent running of certain exploits.
