Opinions on the Motorola Cover Car Mount Combo

I was wondering what people think of the Droid cover/car mount combo? What are some pros and cons? I really want a case that fits into a car mount but I find the circular thing that sticks out of the back of the case really annoying. You have to remove it if you're just carrying around the droid and you have to snap it back on if you want to mount it in the car dock.

Thanks for any comments and opinions. Here's a link to the accessory I'm talking about: http://www.verizonwireless.com/b2c/store/accessory?action=accessoryDetails&archetypeId=11934

i would see two cons with this mount: the first, you already mentioned about the circular thing that sticks out of the back of the case.  and the other is that if the case breaks, what do you have then?  a mount that is good for nothing?

the pro (which is a con for Verizons other car mount) you dont have to keep removing the backside of your droid case to attach it to the car mount.  i currenly have the other car mount and the Verizon holster/shell combo.  the backside is real easy to take off but putting it in a safe place so it doesnt accidently break is troublesome.  but if my shell/holster breaks, then at least i still have a fully functional car mount.

Having it break and therefore making the mount useless was also a big con for me too. But I'm guessing that Motorola would have replacement parts that you could order.

Now another pro that I thought of last night was that this case is made my Motorola which means the fit has to be better than a lot of others out there. They know their product the best so I would imagine and hope that it was a nice fit but doesn't block any of the main components or affect the keyboard.

I just got one.  Mounted it up last night.

I had been looking for a cover, and had been interested in the other car mount before I saw this.

Like you, I assumed the Motorola case would have a better fit / finish than the others, and that is correct.  The cover is sturdy, has excellent fit, and should do a good job of protecting the phone.  It seems a lot beefier than many of the aftermarket covers I've looked over.  It does add a little to the overall size of the phone, but I didn't find that to be a problem.  The cover has a nice texture and, as a plus for me, seems to stiffen up the keyboard slider a little.   There are two inserts that can be used with the back cover.  One has the post for use with the mount, and one is a flat blank to fill in the hole.  I don't think getting a replacement part would be a problem if you're concerned with breakage.  Removing the back cover is a bit of an inconvenience to switch posts, but that should be manageable once you have a technique down.

The combo also includes a Batman-esque utility belt clip that works with the post if you're into that kind of thing.  I tend to be a little clumsy, and prefer to keep the phone in my pocket to prevent the rogue desk corner from attacking my screen.

The mount is a mount.  It seems sturdy enough, though I found the left to right rotation to be a little loose no matter how much I tighten it.  All of the other joints are keyed, and secure easily with the tightening of a thumb screw.  We'll see how the suction cup stands up to the test of time.

Now for the cons.

1) I was under the impression that the car mount behaved similar to the media docking station in that the screen would remain lit when in the mount.  That is not the case.  It behaves just as it would anywhere else.  I don't know if this has something to do with my phone settings, however, any applications that would normally keep the screen from going dark (i.e.. Navigation) will continue to do so.

2) I have a media docking station, and was (perhaps foolishly) hoping the Motorola cover would work with that without having to remove the back cover.  This isn't the case, but you can leave the front cover in place.  Just make sure the phone is attached securely.  As I said previously I think the removal of the back cover with get easier with a little practice.

3) I had to position the mount higher than I normally would in order to accommodate my charging cable.  I've seen 90 degree mini USB cables that would be nice in this situation, but I've never really looked for a micro USB cable like this.  For the price I can't complain, but it sure would have been nice if one was included.

That's it so far.  Hope this helps.

Thanks so much for the detailed review!

I just wanted to understand the con where you said the phone was going to into navigation mode when put into the mount. So does that mean that the navigation needs to be manually turned on? And does it stay on?

If you buy this one, the Droid switches to navigation the instant you snap it into the holder.  It stays on as long as you keep it plugged into the lighter.

Sorry for the delay.

To clarify:

The other car mount, as jimfitzgerald pointed out, automatically switches over to "Car Home" when you put the phone in the mount.  So far, I have to switch over to "Car Home" mode manually.

With this mount, the screen goes black after my default setting of 30 seconds - even when plugged in to my charger.  On the other mount, if you're charging your phone, the screen will remain lit.

If I switch over to Google Navigation, the phone will stay lit, like it always does.

Basically, my gripe is the phone doesn't know or care that it is in a car mount.  It acts just like it would in your pocket.

Hope this helps.

I see what you mean. It definitely could be an annoyance. Thank you so much for bringing it up! You've helped me decide what to purchase.

I thought about getting the car dock and looked and then looked at all the other accessories.

I had the original shell and case design verizon offered, that I did not like so went with the seidio case and love it. I have had a Garmin for two years now so I just paired it with teh phone. When I get in the car, it automatically sinks with it and I can make and receive calls from that even when using the Garmin, just leave the phone in my pocket or on the dash!

Works for me!

I bought the standard car mount and multimedia charger sold here.  I like them both.  I carry my Droid in my pants pocket without any case or cover.  It snaps right into the car mount and immediately switches to navigation mode.  I also bought a Jawbone ICON bluetooth ear piece that works very well with the handsfree dialing app.

That may do it!  Thanks, now I just have to deal with the annoyance of switching over the Car mode manually!  :smileyhappy:
