Phone can't read SD card

I've only had my DX a couple weeks now and today was the first time I connected it to my computer. I downloaded a couple ringtones last night and copied them over to my phone no problem, but then when I tried to connect it again to install a non-market app it keeps saying the memory card is missing. I've been at this for over an hour now, I've formatted the SD card twice, and it still won't work. Does anyone know what went wrong or what I can do to fix it?

When you connect ot your PC, there should be an icon that pops up in your top bar. Swipe down that bar and click on the Connection icon. Make sure it is using "MASS STORAGE".  have you tried that?

edit:  PS, you DID install the co-req PC driver, right?  It's the MOTO driver and must be tere to communicate with the phone.

Yes and yes. As I said, it worked fine for the ringtones, and it was only after that it started giving me the error message. I can't figure out what happened. /:

Also, did I misread your OP?  Are you saying the PC can't see the phone/card, or are you saying the PHONE no longer see the Card?  If it's the PHONE not seeing it, make sure you go into Settings / SD Card & Phone Storage -- and make sure the card is MOUNTED ...  Because if you FORMATTED the Card, you likely UNMOUNTED it to do that.

The phone can't see the card. And when I connect it, I can't mount it. I mount the card prior to connecting, and then as soon as I plug in the USB cord it prevents me from mounting the card. In the settings the box is no longer clickable.

OK, let try to tackle this 1 item at a time.

For the Phone accessing the card :  Did you try to MOUNT the card in the Settings on the phone? (not connected to the PC) What is the status in Settings for the Card?  Did you try powering down and doing a BATTERY PULL? Power back up?

It can mount when it isn't connected, but when it is connected it can't access the card for some reason. And I pulled the battery several times now (turning it off first of course, didn't just pull the battery out).

It is working correctly ...  When you connect the phone via USB to the PC, it becomes UNMOUNTED on the phone's settings - but at that point, you can only access the card via the PC.  When you disconnect the USB cable, the phone will automatically reMOUNT the card.

If at that point you CANNOT, regardless of which connection setting you try, that is a know bug. Happened to me as well.  The only way I know that works to get around that is change the phone's SETTINGS / APPLICATIONS / DEVELOPMENT  and turn ON the USB DEBUGGING option.  That fixed this issue for many of us.

Alright, but it still won't let me access media share. Still says the SD card is missing.

So you turned on USB DEBUGGING, right?   Then when you Connect, which connection setting are you using from the pull-down bar?  Mass Storage? PC Mode? which ???

And frankly, Moto Media Share and Verizon's Media Manager doesn't work very well..  You're better off just connecting and just using File Manager on your PC to manage the directories ... at least in many of our experieinces.

Debugging is on, using Mass Storage. Sorry to be such a pain in the **bleep**, but could you just walk me through like a step-by-step of how you personally would go about installing a non-market app?

lol .. you're not ..  I'm just trying to be clear about what the underlying issue is.  The SD CARD must be mounted and accessible directly from your phone to store stuff on it.  Even if it's not mounted, you still have access to the phone's internal storage. Can you in fact access the card from the phone now?  If that is true, is your issue NOW only that you can't install that non-market APP?  I don't do that so can't provide much "how to" for non-market apps. I assume you copied the APP to your PC and are just trying to COPY it to your phone's SD Card?

From your PC, when connected via USB MODE, are you saying that using your PC to access folders directly, you still cannot see the DRIVE letter that pops up for your phone? (via MY COMPUTER)

I'm very unclear what the issue is here.  Get MEDIA MGR out of the picture. Do you see a DRIVE LETTER?? Can you open it via PC FILE FOLDERS.

beyond this, I'm not sure what the issue is.. Sorry ...

When not connected, the phone can access the SD card.

I can access the phone via my PC, but I'm not sure what you mean by drive letter. When I open the removable disk folder all I see are the following folders:

.android_secure

logs

LOST.DIR
