Plan While Traveling

Hello,
I'm considering upgrading from my Eris to a D2Global as I will be either traveling in Europe for 3 months or actually moving to London for 9 months later this year and will need a phone to use there along with data. To avoid paying the rather expensive global data/phone rates, I plan to purchase local SIM cards to use while in Europe. My question is: if I'm using local SIM cards while internationally traveling, what happens to my account here in the States? Obviously I do not want to have to pay for a US plan that I won't be using while also paying for a European plan, but I'll also be renewing my 2 yr contract when I upgrade to this phone.

These forums are primarily user to user support (but there are some VZW employee's who help out).

Thank you jasnmar for your help. You do have the option to put your service on a suspension without billing while you are outside the U.S. Each suspension period is 90 days. You can suspend your service maximum 180 days, two-90 day suspensions per rolling 12 months without billing. There is no maximum for suspending service with continued billing.
There is a $15.00 fee if service is suspended with a customer service representative. However, you can suspend your service with no fee directly in My Verizon by clicking Suspend/Reconnect in the I Want To section, then select Other for the reason code, and follow the remaining steps.
