Port 8989 blocked?

Hi all!

I have andFTP app installed on my droid X. I connect via FTP on port 8989 (instead of the traditional port 21). It works fine when I am connected through wifi; however it does NOT work when I try it over 3G. Does anyone know if Verizon blocks port 21 or 8989? I attempted to call tech support however, that was the most unproductive call I have ever made. The guy could not understand my question and was not even sure what I meant by "port".

CAN ANYONE HELP?!

I wouldn't be surprised if any FTP application would be blocked no matter what port is being use because how network intensive app like that can be.   You may can try pinging the transmission and see which port grants a more consistent pipeline and a faster access time. once you identify that you may can set that as your gateway but this is a ideal because I haven't attempted to access information like this on device and see if access is allowed, I use to do this with WM but android has a bit more restrictions to be able to access the networks configurations,  but the FTP you are using may have more advance network mapping options.

First off, thanks for the suggestions. Trying to find a port that IS allowed is too much work for me. I find it strange that I can not fine a definitive answer as to if they block particular ports or the entire protocol. The fact that their "tech support" had no idea what the hell I was talking about was quite frustrating. I suppose my answer for now is simply that FTP can not be used over 3G....boo!

This would be my thought as well that its not allowed...  When you spoke to Tech Support did you speak to the internet tech department?  If you was speaking to a general CS they wouldn't have knowledge of network configurations or restrictions, so I am not surprised the answer you received.

Since its a 3rd party app they do not support it so I really dont think Motorola will be much help also, have you emailed the developer of the app and see if they had any suggestions?

I did a search on the market and found this program that will do a port scan on a remote host for open ports.

http://utopicsoft.com/android.php?pkgid=com.twistandroid.portscan

The link is a webpage for this program, with a QR code to get to the program in the market without searching. You can specify which ports to check on a remote host. It also says that it supports 3G, so this might be a program you will want to check out. They have a free and paid version (link is to the free version, ad supported)
