Problem Updating Towers

My phone works fine in Virginia where I bought and activated it. I was told when I went out of town to dial *228 and use option 2. I am currently in Cumberland, Maryland with no 3G... I tried to update the towers by dialing *228 opt 2, but I get this error message (audibly, not visually) "Message MO 34. Welcome to US Cellular. Your service doesn't allow calling to the number dialed." I then get this message visually on my droid x "A special call needs to be made to activate your phone service. After pressing "Activate" listen to the instructions provided to activate your phone. So I click the little activate button at the bottom of my Droid. "Extended network..."

"Message MO 34. Welcome to US Cellular. Your service doesn't allow calling to the number dialed."
Can someone please tell me what I need to do to fix this?

Yep, you needed to do the *228 option 2 before going out of town.
The issue is you are trying to use a VZW programing code on a us cellular tower.
Edit: Looking at a coverage map, I see Cumberland is only a 1x extended area. Actually for that matter, most of Maryland and WV are only 1x extended, almost follows their boarders exactly.

I did it before I left my home town... I was told then when I went out of town, when I got wherever I was going, to do it again. So now that I'm on a US Cellular tower, how do I get off it? I did opt. 2 and it said successfully updated in Virginia.

Ok. I just realized my misunderstanding. The 228 opt 2 feature doesn't actually tell the phone to switch towers, but simply updates the available towers (as verizon builds and activates them) never mind. My bad.

Well, actually *228 option 2 does an update to the PRL, preferred roaming list. This gives you access to towers which are not VZW, but they have an agreement to allow use to vzw users.

Im having the same problem. I looked at the coverage map and it says Clinton Indiana is in 3G but from the signal I get on my phone it would be more like I get 1 bar maybe two bars at best and I just did the *228 with the option 2, if you can help me out I would really appreciate it cause the more I am here the more my phone dies on a regular basis and a lot quicker. Thanks for the help

Sometimes you can connect to a wifi connection and then call the *228 and option 2 because the issue you are having with it not updating is because it downloads the data through data connection and you have none.... This isnt guarenteed to work but you can try connecting to a wifi connection..

Wifi and the network connection are two diffrent connection, if you have a store that has a wifi service in it, our a hotel of even the location you are staying has a wifi router you can use it to connect.. Wifi is a home base susyem and the phone can connec to a wifi even with no phone service on device.

It sounds like your programming went through just fine when you dialed *228 and chose option number 2. This does program your phone with the current cell tower listings (PRL). Once that is done, if you have had and continue to have poor signal inside your home, the best option would be to get a Network Extender which does create a 3G signal inside your home as well.
If you get a poor signal outside your home, it would be best to open up a trouble ticket for your area with tech support. You can go about this 1 of 2 ways. To do this via a direct phone call, dial 866-892-7957 (direct tech support number), or you can PM me with your cell phone number, and I will give you a call.
Let us know if anything improves!

well i do not think i will be get the extender because of how pricey it is. I am trying to figure the best solution since i will be in this area for the next 2 1/2 months. My phone is not a droid X i was just looking how to reset and i have dialed the number and the same result with the signal. Within the house i am residing i will get no signal to maybe 1 bar. Outside i get one bar to 2 bars. It says there is 3G coverage in my area. How long is tech support open EST?
