If you sign a new two year contract and purchase a Droid, you have to fulfill the terms of the contract to avoid an ETF. However, if you have an old phone you want to use instead of the Droid, I believe you can cancel your data plan and put the old phone on the two year contract. As long as you stay on the two year plan, I believe you will be OK, but I'm not 100 percent certain. One thing I know you can't do is purchase another new discounted phone until the Droid is paid for (2 years).

yeah, the ETF only applies if you actually cancel the line with Verizon.  You won't be subject to the ETF by simply activating another phone on the line whether it requires a data plan or not.  Do note that if you upgrade through wirefly or some of the other 3rd party retailers, you aren't able to activate another phone and drop the data plan without their secondary ETF.

No you will not have to pay an ETF if you decided to activate another phone under that number. The only time a ETF apply is when you are canceling service all together no longer wanting to be a customer with Verizon Wireless and your still in contract.
