Does your email provider support checking email from a mobile device via POP3 or IMAP connections? A couple years back my isp did not support the feature to check email via mobile devices, the only way I could read/reply was doing so by using the Palm browser and logging into my isp's web mail page.
Can you get email from other providers... Gmail, Yahoo etc etc. If so then the problem is with the email settings in the device not being correct or the isp does not support mobile email. Your email provider should have a list of alternate settings to use if the standard ones do not work.

Here are the port numbers you should be using, for POP3 port it should be 995, and no on both questions. For outgoing SMTP the port number is 587, and again no for both questions.
