Repeated g-mail Sign In Errors

In the last few weeks I am consistently receiving a notification that I have a G-mail sign in error.  Their frequency is increasing. I used to receive these notifications periodically, but now I receive a few a week.  Also, when I hit the notification, I get a screen to enter a nonsense word.  It used to be when I entered the word, the error would go away.  Now, I enter the word, wait a minute or two and get a new error message.  This is not because I entered the nonsense word incorrectly--they are hard to read--this happens when I get the word right.

Fortunately, I don't use my g-mail account regularly.  But it is an annoyance and I would like to know why this is happening.  It this a phone error, a hardware error, a software error or a network error.

Any ideas?

I have provided some steps below that may be helpful.

Step 1 – Clear the Gmail application data (note: this will not erase any emails on the Gmail account. To complete this step, please follow the instruction below:

-Select Menu
-Select Settings
-Select Applications
-Select Manage Applications
-Select the Gmail icon
-Select Clear data

Step 2 – Try changing the password of the Gmail account. This error message is usually created by a password error. I would recommend going online to mail.google.com and changing the password.

Step 3 – Try a soft reset. To complete this step, please follow the instructions below:

-Power off the device
-Remove the battery for 15-20 seconds
-Place the battery back into the device
-Power the device back on

Step 4 – Try placing the device into safe mode. Safe mode is a method that allows the device to run without non-essential applications. This is beneficial for troubleshooting 3rd party applications. I have given a link to the instruction below:

If you do not get the error while in safe mode, it may be an application that is not native to the device that is causing a conflict. It would be recommended to remove any downloaded application that may be tied into the devices email.

Step 4 – Completing a hard reset. Performing a hard reset will remove ALL data including the Google account, system data, application data, application settings, and downloaded applications. Only perform this reset if absolutely necessary. I have included the instruction below if none of the above options are helpful, and you wish to proceed with this option.
