Required plans for Droid?

Ok, so i'm due for an update and im gonna get the Droid as my new phone. But first, a question. I know about the $30/month data plan that is required, that's fine. But everywhere i read, i also see something about adding a voice plan of at least $39.99/month. My current plan is already $90/month with 3 other lines added.. Do i still need to add this "voice plan" and if so, why??

It will most likely require the $30 data plan, so you just add it on top of your current price plan as long as its Nationwide Plan.

So If I am already in a family plan and want to grab this phone, the only thing extra that it will cost me will be the $30 data plan? My texting and minutes will not change, correct?

Correct, but if you are in a ACII plan most likely you will have to change to a Nationwide Plan.

I did not want to make a new thread as it is related. I Have the connect plan with no smart phones. If I get the droid, all it is , is a 30 dllr data plan ? for each phone I get?(maybe thinkling of 2.)

I just called Verizon and asked about the Motorola Droid and the HTC Eris as far as needing a data plan? He said that the ERIS WILL need a data plan, but the DROID will NOT need a data plan...

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say he didn't know what the heck he was talking about. Ultimately, while they are from different manufacturers and have a few different specs, they are the same thing. A Smartphone. And to use all those wonderful features, you need a data plan, and VzW will require one, period.

Just a quick question, sorry if it's been answered before.

Right now i am on a family plan (Select/1400), if i were to upgrade to the Connect plan, would I still have to buy a data plan? It says on the connect plan that there is unlimited data.

I know verizon has amazing coverage and such, but $30/month is pretty expensive in addition to our regular plans...

Yes, its $30 per line for the data plan. Connect or Premium will not work.

You can't upgrade to connect and get a Droid because its a smartphone. Any smartphone, PDA, Blackberry does not work with Connect or Premium and they have to have $30 data plan per line.

And as far as a Droid not needing a data plan, that rep must be smoking something because its a smartphone.

I currently have a Verizon phone and a Touch. I was hoping the Droid could merge these two together. A phone with Wifi. I don't want the data plan.... Just the wifi works fine for me. I just want a basic phone with wifi.

I still have to get a data plan?

I have a question, as I don't know what happens with a scenario like mine.

I am no where near due for an upgrade. I am currently a verizon customer but want the Droid, especially since my current phone resets on me frequently. Do I need to pay the full retail price just because I'm not a new customer? Or can I pay the price that new customers will pay?

I usually get a new phone when my contract is up. But this is a different scenario. Any accurate answers would be greatly appreciated! :smileyhappy:

It has been said already.......YES......if you have a SMARTPHONE you have to have the $30 data plan!!! The connect and premium plan, unlimited data is for text and picture messeging. Don't matter if you wanna just use wifi. Don't matter if you will never get on the internet. Thank you..

I'm on a famiy plan with 3 phones, no data plans, I think the baseline is about $120/mo. I'm up for NE2 and when I log in and look at smartphones and BB's, they ALL say they are eligible with my current plan, i.e. implying I don't need to shell out more for a data plan. Only netbooks require a plan change. So do you think that when the droid comes out, I will need to upgrade my plan? If so, and I can get the Touch Pro 2 without shelling more monthly fees, I think I will stick with the HTC. In fact, I think this will be the critical deal maker/breaker for me.

YES! Exactly my situation! Three phones, no data plan. I'm eligible for an upgrade.

I look at eligible phones for my upgrade. Lots of them are 'smart phones', 'compatible with your current plan'.

My current plan DOESN'T include a data plan. But, I am offered Blackberrys, Ozones, Saga,enV®3....... all saying 'compatible with your current plan'.

Are you saying that the Droid is different?

Why isn't the Droid in the same category as these other phones I am being offered without needing a data plan?

Really....... I'm not trying to be a jerk here.... I just don't understand....

*sigh*.... OK.... I googled 'do I need a data plan for the droid' and all the answers I found said Yes.

Apparently, even though I am offered 'smart phones' that are supposedly 'compatible with your current plan' when looking for a new phone, this is NOT TRUE! If I were to upgrade to a Blackberry, Verizon would REQUIRE me to upgrade my plan to include a data plan. They are not telling me this when they are claiming that Blackberrys and other smart phones are 'compatible with your current plan'.

On a side note...

Even though Verizon doesn't offer it, it looks like there are plenty of people who would prefer a smartphone plan with WiFi-only internet access. And for good reason, since $30/month spread out over a 2 year contract is $720. But people who want this option should expect to pay more for their smartphone up front. I understand that the whole reason Verizon is able to offer the Droid at $199 is because they subsidize the cost of the phone with their data plans and contracts. But I wouldn't mind paying $600 for the Droid up front if that meant I wouldn't have to sign up for the data plan. I think that is a fair. Also, I think it would be in Verizon's best interests to offer this option because it would reduce the strain on their network caused by so many people with unlimited data plans. Basically, they could help to prevent the same reliability problem caused by iPhone users on the AT&T network.

First, the reason the online system says the PDAs are compatible with your current plans is because they are. The data package is an add-on FEATURE, not a plan. Secondly, if you think Verizon is the only company who won't sell you a new phone at sale price whenever you want, you might as well not have a phone at all, as all major carriers do this. You sign the contract to get a discount on the phone. If you haven't fulfilled most of that contract, then Verizon can't let you renew again to get another one because they would lose money. Goosefraba!

the new samsung rogue requires a data plan but it will work with the connect plan. its not classified as a smartphone so will the droid? time will tell.

Dude, time will tell nothing. Google any thing you want for Android and its a smartphone OS, smartphone or whatever. It will not be or will ever be a Enhanced Multimedia Device. Don't want the data plan just dont get the phone.

I called and confirmed with a verizion cs rep yesterday who said that the droid is compatible with the connect plan. It may be considered a smartphone, but it will not require a 30$ data plan when used on a connect plan. If you don't believe, call and see for yourself.

Thanks, thats good to know. Now i will be able to drop my 30 buck blackberry plan. Kind of funny that alot of people are saying its a smartphone and you got to get the 30 data plan but i have yet to see that they got that info from a verizon rep.

It looks like they haven't gotten the correct information to their employees as depending who you ask, you get different answers.

okay i dont get all this talk, i read through this topic and didnt find an answer for my specific question so i was wondering...how much would it cost and what would i have to do to upgrade from my lg titanium (i dont know what plan we have but i know we dont have a data plan) to the droid?

really now?? I'm pretty sure, actually 100% sure, that when AT&T came out with the I-phone 3G they offered current customers who were in the middle of contracts the $199 offer. Basically what's pissing me off is Verizon is just selling the droid to gain more customers, and throwing the old ones, us "valued" customers under the bus. Who's going to pay $500 for a phone at retail. If thats the case, then I'll just get it and unlock and use it on a different network, (remeber wifi compatible). You're telling me Verizon can't afford to offer current customers an option. this is horsesh*t!!! Also if Verizon goes this route, the droid wont be that successful, except for those who love google os, which really isnt that many people cuz the main proportion are just going to choose the i-phone becuase of it's rep.

Another angle on the required plan question for the Droid... Currently I have the $44.99 BlackBerry unlimited plan, which I understand is the requirement if you have a BES connection to my Exchange Server for push mail. Both my kids have BB devices, but only connect to gmail accounts, so they only need the $29.99 data plan. Tastes great, lasts a long time.

I'm moving to the Droid and plan to use ActiveSync to connect to Exchange for push. Would I be able to 'downgrade' to the $29.99 plan?

Anyone have some insight on this?

just talked to cs. the droid will not work on anything else but a nationwide select plan. the phone will not accept any other plan. and there has to be a data plan with that because the select plan does not have an unlimited data option.

i currently have the premium plan for my env3 and they said i would have to go down to the select plan for $79, get the data plan for $30, and the VW Navigator for $10. all in all i would be paying $20 more that what i am currently paying for.

the bad news is that i will have to buy the phone outright since i started verizon in july. but as luck would have it, have $200 in gift certificates for best buy and was told by best buy i could use them for the droid and still get the reward points.

Won't require Select; will require minimum $30 data package. Select only refers to unlimited messaging, which has never been a requirement on any phone.

droid phones aren't compatible with vz navigator, sounds like you need to call again as your information directly contradicts information that I got from cs.

actually this was a major sticking point for me. currently in my job i need a gps and dont want to carry a separate unit. i stressed if the droid offered a separate application for it or does the vz navigator app have to be purchased. they said i would have to pay the $9.99 for the Navigator. i later called for another question, different cs rep, and they too said the same thing.

i too also thought switching plans was not necessary but it would have to be necessary. the connect and premium plans offer unlimited data packages. select does not. in fact you have to pay $1.99 per mb. so why would they have you stay at the connect and/or premium if they were still going to charge you $30 for a data plan?

the select plan is the lowest plan without a data plan.

Sorry if i have misunderstood your problem willanaya, but one of the major advantages of the droid over just about any other device is the built in FREE gps service that google will provide. VZnav will not be necessary on this phone.

Correction, willanaya. BASIC plan is the lowest without a data plan. Select costs $30 more for the messaging.

but i should clarify what i was stating: select is the lowest plan after connect without a data plan. a plan that would require a $30 package instead of paying $2 a mb.

Sorry to say if you don't want a data plan fee then u the Droid is not the phone for u. These companies try to suck every last cent from us. I'm sure they could do it but they want to make $$$$$. i didn't want to pay for a data plan either.

Well, I would rather say that the companies want to get compensated for services provided... If you don't want the phone or service, no one forces you to get it. But on the other hand, if you want it you should be willing to pay for it.

Or on the other hand, you could just buy a Droid off of eBay for full retail and do whatever you want with it in terms of plans... See there are a wealth of options.

I'm already thinking of swiching to iphone if Verizon doesn't help me out and help me get the Droid. I renewed my contract in August 2009 not knowing they were working on the Droid and want the DROID but i would have to pay retail price and for that i would switch to the iphone. i heard AT&T has covered the new customers termination fee. anyone hear the same thing?

Well, as of this past summer AT&T wasn't paying ETFs... I knew 2 people that went from T-Mobile to AT&T to get iPhone 3GS and they had to pay their ETF.

Your experience may vary.

I wouldn't expect Verizon to do anything though... Why should they? You aren't eligible for a discount right now. And if you don't mind paying the ETF in the first place (to change to AT&T) why not just add a new Verizon line to get the Droid cheap, then cancel the new line? Not the most honest thing to do, in my opinion, but another option - at least until Verizon increases their ETF amounts (as is speculated). :smileywink:
