SD Card/Droid X Issues

Short question: has anyone had their Droid X destroy an SD card (make it unreadable)?

Long story:

My wife and I finally took the leap and bought smartphones in February.  She settled on an iPhone (loved her touch and didn't want to learn a new OS) while I decided on a Droid X.  I love my phone - I really do - but it is really ticking me off right now.

We bought the phones on February 12th.  Everything was running smoothly until mid-March.  During normal use, my phone popped up that the SD card was unreadable, had an error, or some other message of doom.  Also, the battery would indicate a full charge and then drop to 50% or less immediately after removing it from the charger.  After doing a bit of reading, I find out that the SD card that came with the Droid X is not necessarily of the highest quality and can be easily replaced by Verizon or Motorola.

With this knowledge in hand, I walk into my local Verizon store and the salesperson looks at my phone.  "Sorry" he says, "we can't do anything about this."  I asked why and he told me that because I had LauncherPro installed, I had voided any and all warranty and I was out of luck.  I knew that this was erroneous information, as LauncherPro simply skinned the phone with a new homescreen and required no root access at all, but he wouldn't hear of it.  With a smile, he dutifully walked me to the door and told me to have a nice day.

When I got home, I uninstalled LauncherPro, wiped the phone to stock and found that my SD card still didn't work and I was still having battery issues.  I took the phone back to the store, found the same salesperson (by chance) and he told me that now that the phone was stock, he could replace the battery (which he did and now works great!) and give me the number for Motorola to have the SD card replaced.

I call Motorola on March 29.  "We would be happy to ship you a new card", the voice says, "but we are out of stock and don't know when will get new ones in.  Call back later."  Apparently their system won't allow an order to be placed and then filled when stock becomes available.  Oh well.

Fast forward to Monday, June 20.  I call Motorola back and they are going to ship me my card - sweet!  While I have been waiting on the new SD card, I have been using a Sandisk Class 2 4 GB card that I used to use in my LG ENV Touch.  Today, during normal usage, that card craps out on me.  I go back to the store.

I explain to the salesperson (a new one this time) the situation - that my phone had fried two SD cards.  I also told her that I believe it to be a hardware or software issue because it had gone through two SD cards in 3 months.  She listens to my story and then takes my phone into the back.  When she comes back out, she tells me that it is the SD card that is bad.  I calmly explain that the SD card wasn't bad this morning, but it suddenly became so.  She responds that she put the card in her Incredible 2 and it didn't work, but her card worked in my phone, so it must be a card issue.  I told her again that my phone can read good cards, but it seems to kill them.  In all of this she tells me that I have an X2.  "No, it's a first generation X."  We go back and forth a few times until I tell her that Gingerbread came out a few weeks ago and I used the OTA update process to install it.  "Oh, well it looks like the X2" - please know your hardware Verizon!

Finally, she settled on making a note in my file and if it happens again, she might consider a software/hardware problem.  I get my new memory card in a few days so we will see.

Sorry to hear you have had so many unique issues... I cant believe they said LPP voided warrenty..:smileysurprised:  WHAT??? :smileyvery-happy: , but moving on...

Out of curiousity

1.Have you tried the card in a pc when it wouldnt read in phone?

2.Also have you tried formatting card before using.

I havent had any issues with a sd card but I know they do go out but not as fast as you have experianced..  Do you have any apps installed to card because maybe a app is corrupting the card with bad data?

Thanks for the help!  I have tried both cards in my laptop after they died and the computer couldn't read them.  I have not tried formatting the card prior to use - I may try that next time.  The only app that runs from the SD card is Listen (it won't let me use my podcasts without an SD card).

Thanks again!

a Dood like that does that to ya it's time to talk to the Manager.  Or if there is another store in your city go to it or a city close by an

report his actions you did not " **** "  that phone an Void the Warrenty by puting that launcher on it.  an him telling you this was

Stuppid on his part He was probably trying to get you to by a new Sd card. An then him walking you to the Door that would of really

brought up the red flags with me right there.  An that Sec. Rep.  telling you that you had a X2 when you can defiently tell the

two apart by the X having a Camera button in Bright Red an the X2 Does'nt even have one. She must have received her training

by reading the Cracker Jax Box.

A foot Note to Pass on:

I looked in the Market an Read Launcher Pro's Description an it does not show any wear in its descrition that it will  ****  a phone an Void the Warrenty.  So if any one can find this an prove it.!   i will Dye my hair Purple.Lol  :smileyvery-happy:   it would be a change from red any way Ha ! That salesperson should be reported. Launcher Pro is a valid apps that you can find in the marketplace. I agree that this sales rep should be one of the many unemplyed.

Both of the reps he dealt with should be reported... The X2 doesn't have a camera button on the outside while the X does, that's a major giveaway that the OP didn't have an X2. Wow.
