SD Unmounts itself on its own

So something new has started happening with my DX.....it seems that the card mysteriously unmounts itself, although when I goto the settings for storage it doesn't show the card it unmounted

Let me explain myself for those that are going 'huh?'. So my past several experiences with this is that when I am on facebook mobile, I go to 'share' a picture (either on facebook itself or via text message) and I regularly get a message saying that the SD card must be mounted to continue. I can either go and turn off the phone and boot it back up, or I can goto the SD card settings, unmount the card and then mount it back and I can 'share' the picture.

Today I had this happen to me twice....once this morning and then just now. Both were resolved but it doesn't hold. I'm sure I'll do it tomorrow and the next day.....what is interesting about this is that the SD card in my phone is an aftermarket card that I bought to replace the one the phone came with, the one that completely corrupted and Verizon absolutely refused to replace.

Before you say it, it is NOT an app that is causing this problem so don't tell me to deinstall Facebook to resolve my problem. The experiences I've had may have recently been while I was within facebook, but I had to last week reboot my phone when I was unable to view pictures in the gallery and saw signs of the card potentially getting to the point where it was about to corrupt (based on past experience with the old SD card prior to its corrupting. Don't always think it is an APP that causes problems, as I have had these problems with the phone before any apps were even installed on the phone. I'm convince that the problem is with GB and the crud that Moto and VZW do with the phone, as any problems with the phone started AFTER GB was pushed to the phone.

I have removed apps before and have done multiple factory resets, and as soon as the phone boots up with for the first time, the phone has issues, that I have learned to live with to a point. I have friends with their own Droid X and many of the same apps I have installed and they have NO problems with their phone - my friends have started telling me that I'm nothing but a walking computer virus LOL. I have my upgrade available (with the $20 upgrade fee) and have decided I'm just gonna go back to an iPhone....atleast with it, it wasn't crapping out all the time and didn't require me to always reboot the phone or pop the battery out (yeah I know you can't pop the battery on an iPhone).

Has anyone else experienced this?

I haven't experienced this personally, but you could try backing up your card to your computer, then reformat the card (fat32) and put everything back on.  If it is getting corrupted, this may help.

Been reading your SD card issues from previous, to now. No SD card unmounting problems here and I've done the same photo uploads.

What I have seen on my phone is the Gallery rendered unusable from time to time. This also started after GB on my phone. I posted those findings in my GB rants.

Some instances, not all, were because of a corrupt photo. That infers the camera app (sorry, had to use that word). Some photos taken with the stock camera wreak havoc on my Gallery. Why they don't cause the SD card issues you've seen, I don't know.

Others inevitably will suggest using a market camera app. I have. No change.

I tend to chalk it up to software, in general. Another reason, like you, my next phone likely won't be Android.

actually the card has been reformatted multiple times, as had the one the phone originally came with.....I don't think the actual card is getting corrupted, but rather there is a system file (not an app file) that keeps crappin out

yeah the gallery does that to me regularly. Usually rebooting the phone will fix it, or the occasional popping of the battery and pulling out the SD card. The photos at times will show some pixilation problems which will tell me that the camera app may be the cause, but usually when the gallery doesn't let me look at pictures then I know something is getting ready to happen so I do the above (pop the battery and pull the SD card) to resolve it, but this is becoming an ongoing problem now with multiple times a day getting the message that I need to make sure my SD card is mounted.

IPhone here I come :smileyhappy:

Keiffers, you say you've had an iphone before. Is rebooting a common troubleshooting method on iphones? How about factory resets?

Battery pulls don't apply, I know, as that isn't possible. They don't have SD cards, either?

Just trying to compare the two, but all these Android "troubleshooting" methods that we've become accustomed to....... seem like relieving oneself on a burning building; i.e., an exercise in futility. Yeah, it helps a little, for a little while.

My experience was with an iPhone was on AT&T so it was obviously a little different than VZW but I do not recall that i ever had to reboot the iPhone. Seems that the only rebooting it did was if there was an update pushed through iTunes (didn't have the wireless update at the time that you have now with them). I think part of the problem between the Android and iOS is that as someone else has mentioned, is that Apple won't let apps get released unless they are validated to work without a problem with the phones, whereas the Android Market there is not that protection, then again there are multiple versions of the Android OS out there and phone makers will tweak it to their own liking, as do the various carriers. I admit there are problem child apps, but I truly think the problem with the DX is that Moto has so messed up the OS with their own tweaks, not to mention the crappy Blur UI, so that probably contributes to 85% of the problems users have with the DX, but that's only my opinion.

But that's what surprised me about being with AT&T was that there were never cases of having to regularly reboot the phone (or battery pulls if the phone had a removeable batter), granted I don't have much experienc with non-Apple phones @ AT&T. I had come from Verizon to get the iPhone 3GS and EVERY phone I had on Verizon before that switch (blackberry, an LG and even a Moto, last two just being regular flip phones) all required a regularly reboot and/or had to have a battery pull. The blackberries were the worst. Not to mention they always told you that you had to dial *228 once a month to update roaming. Those both blow my mind since one would think that if they want to update your roaming profiles, they could just do it automatically, but to have to reboot your phone all the time also perplexed me.

Obviously Apple has got something right with an iPhone (although I don't know anyone with an iPhone on Verizon so I don't know if they have to reboot very much or not at all). where there is one OS that is not tweaked by the phone carrier. Android is a great OS, but Google allows carriers to change it to match various phones. I really think that there should be some standardization for Androids that will allow various phone makers to be more streamlined, rather than having various cyclops versions floating around.
