I have some basic questions because I am a first timer in the smart fone arena. To begin with, can one get rid of the 1st step to get the fone unlocked? That is, the step of putting the puzzle piece in the empty space?

Dear stuwing,
Yes, and no. The Charge does not allow you to leave the screen completely unlocked, as I understand it. You have two choices for the type of screen unlock you would like. To choose, on any home screen, press the Menu button (left physical button), then select Display settings>Unlock screen. You can choose the "Glass unlock" - which unlocks the screen by a swipe across the screen - or leave the Puzzle unlock in place.
