Apparently there is a common problem with screen rotation. This thread shows others with this problem with probably older Droids, but yet: http://www.droidforums.net/forum/tech-issues-bug-reports-suggestions/2365-screen-wont-rotate.html
My predicament was the same as the original poster of that thread:
When I first got my phone, it was able to switch from protrait to landscape via tilting - without sliding out keyboard- even while locked and would remain in landspace (if not moved to protrait position) when at home screen. The apps icon screen would also be in landscape when accessed.
If the keyboard was initially out, the home screen would remain in landscape if the keyboard was closed.
For some odd reason, I pressed the hold button at the top to unlock my phone while holding it in landscape (no keyboardout), but the screen remained in portrait. Arriving at the homescreen, it too was in portrait. Same goes for the apps screen. All the while the phone was still held in landscape. When accessing any apps, it would change to landscape. When exited out to the homescreen, it would revert to portrait. Even while opening the keyboard then closing it while it remained in landscape orientation the homescreen would still revert to portrait.
I've tried unchecking the auto-rotate option in the display settings. I've also tried to turn off then turn on my phone. Neither way reverted it back to how it was when I first got my phone.
It seems there's no explanation to why this orientation was changed nor is there a way to remedy it.

Mine never turned to landscape on the home screen unless the keyboard was out. You don't even have to take it all the way out for it to change, which implies that it should definitely be able to do it without the keyboard.
It would be nice it they fixed it. All other screens except the phone app turn to landscape automatically.

I'm pretty sure my keyboard was pushed all the way in when it was able to do landscape. I sometimes popped the keyboard in and out out of bordom, making sure that it was closed all the way each time.

There is definitely some problem, as I noticed that my home screen stopped rotating. VZW suggest a hard reset (lame-Os)...that doesn't work.

Same problem here. Texts can go in landscape, but Facebook and the homepages always seem to need the keyboard out. Unfortunately the phone is training me to learn when to rotate it as I move between programs and I'm starting to do it automatically.

I had no problems with the screen rotation when I first received my phone last week and then just a couple of days ago, it started not rotating. I found a clear plastic film on the back of my slide out. when I removed this film, my rotation problems went away. I felt dumb for not realizing the film was even there. I'm hoping this was an easy fix to my problem.. I'll let you know if this isn't the answer.

I removed that tab the first day, my home screen never did landscape unless the keyboard was out.

My phone has done this too, I too, removed the protective film on the back of the slideout but it hasn't solved my issue. The first couple days I had it, the phone would rotate and I was soo amazed, but now it doesn't. I hope they can fix this soon!
