Shut off data, leave on phone

Switched from Blackberry to Droid X a few months ago. Love this phone.

There was one feature in the BB that I do miss. It's the ability to shut off all data but leave on the phone. AIRPLANE mode is too severe since it shuts off data AND voice. On BB, it was a simple operation to go to Options and shut off data but leave on voice.

On another site, I found a set of commands on Droid X that works. I've copied it below:

***

To disable data:

- Open dialer
- Dial *#*#4636#*#* - 'Phone Info' screen appears
- Press Menu button
- Tap on More
- Tap Disable data connection (Or, Disable data on boot. You could do that on the way TO work, then just reboot when you get to work.)

Simply reverse the steps to re-enable your data connection ... either immediately, or after your next reboot.

***

The procedures listed above DO work ... but it's sort of a hassle to do this every time. If anyone has something a bit simpler, I'm all ears.

P.S. For full credit, I got it from this site --> http://snipurl.com/1zfwn3

Go to Settings / Data Manager /Data Delivery / Uncheck Background data and Data Enabled

As soon as you uncheck these you will see that your 3G icon vanishes to verify its disabled,,

Or go into settings > wireless & networks > mobile networks > uncheck Data enabled.  Edit: It might be buried somewhere else in the phone, but it is there.

There are also apps in the market that allow you to turn the mobile network off with one click from a homesceen.

Tap the Menu key and select System, stroll down to Data Delivery and uncheck Background data and/or Data enabled.

Thanks for the help on this one ... I'd love to test it out but, unfortunately, when I follow the directions:

Settings --> Data Manager --> Data Delivery

This is what happens:

Getting through Settings - simple.

After pressing Data Manager, I have to wait a long time for anything to happen (usually 30 seconds).

Finally, the Data Delivery option appears.

I press Data Delivery and nothing happens for about another 15-30 seconds.

I'm then kicked back to the Settings main screen. At this point, nothing on the Settings main screen responds to anything I try to use (Wireless, Data Manager, Battery, etc.) The only thing I can do at this point is to return HOME and ignore the problem.

P.S. I tried shutting off and restarting the phone since I tend to not do that much, if at all, but that didn't seem to have any effect.

OK - tried the dreaded battery pull and that seemed to help.

If anyone has general advice on whether an occasional reboot and/or battery pull is a good idea, I'm all ears :smileywink:

there is an app called quick settings which allows you to turn off 3g with a push of a button and it`s free in the android market.

Thanks mortb and wildman. I knew that it was somewhere in the droid x, just not sure where. The simulator doesn't always go that deep into the settings. Either way it is a lot easier to get to then dialing all that code. :smileyhappy:
