Signal Issues?

Is anyone else's Droid 2 having signal problems? My phone went from having 3G coverage earlier to 1X to almost none within the past few hours. I've turned it on and turned it off. Anyone know anything I can do to get signal?

Try dialing *228 option 2 to update your PRL (Preferred Roaming List). There are many areas of the country where old Alltel towers are being updated to Verizon specs. In other areas some Verizon towers are being changed to AT&T. This is all stemming from the Verizon/Alltel merger and the prevention of monopolies as required by the FCC.

I have done so many *228 updates I'm tired of trying.  Nothing seems to work.  Battery pull, on/off, hard reset....something is going on

There is other side of the coin since you obviously have the latest PRL. That in urban areas that both Verizon and Alltel were available is that phone sees so many towers it has trouble sticking with one tower.

The thing is that the phone has worked perfectly up until the past week.  I have heard there is supposed to be an update tonight

The update started last night, but will be rolled out in stages.

What, in more detail, is this update that they rolled out?  My 3g speeds have always been on the slow side to mediocre.  Then in the past week, they got so bad that even *228 wouldn't work because the signal was so poor, with the 3g only coming in small bursts, and the upload speed consistantly way higher than the download speeds.  These results were consitant with several phones I tested out, most of them being in an actual Verizon Wireless store while they were swapping out my third droid for my fourth, since I suspected it might be a software or hardware issue causing the issue (oh well, my "A" key was sticking anyway, which is much more irritating than it probably sounds like at first, but try texting heavily with that problem for two months ..)

...but since yesterday my speeds have been AMAZING.  Upwards of almost 2mbps/s...while driving, which is supposed to cut speeds by about half.  Also, I've always gotten an extremely poor signal in my house.  But then again, so does everyone regardless of what phone and carrier they have, which indicates it is the design and materials of the house that is likely responsible.  But in the two days I've been coasting at similar speeds as stated above as well.

Anyway, I am just curious as to what this upgrade entailed more specifically as it seems to have made a world of difference.

You should be able to find some info on the update at http://support.vzw.com/pdf/system_update/droid_2.pdf.
Other than what they tell us it's hard to know what all of the fixes are.
