Can I silence my text messages and still have my phone ring normal for calls?

Yes, Just go to Settings / Sounds / Volume / Turn down Notification volume....

(If option isnt present uncheck the option "Use incoming call volume for notification)

Yes.  If you're using the stock SMS app, go into your inbox.  Then hit the menu button and into settings.  From there you can customize the notification in the notification bar, vibrate, and SMS ringtone.  You should be able to set SMS to silent ringtone while calls will be on sound.
