Sim card problems with new Charge

Last week I purchased for my wife a new Droid Charge from Radio Shack. Ater activation, the phone started displaying a message that there was no Sim card found. They put another Sim card in the phone, and the same thing happened again in the parking lot after going shopping at a different store. By this time, Radio Shack was closed, so I went to see them the next morning.

We tried a new phone and another Sim card. Within 3 minutes, the Sim card was not found again. They called Verizon and said they were told that there is a known problem right now, and that it should be resolved by the end of the weekend. The Sim card would just start working. Sunday rolls around and nothing changes. I call Verizon myself, and they see no problems at all. The Sim activated. They said it must be a phone issue.

I go back to Radio Shack, and we try another Sim. Same thing occurs. We can't try another phone because they have run out of the Charge by this point. For the time being, they activate a Bionic for her phone line (no problems there) and say they will try to figure out what the problem is. It is now Thursday, and still nothing from Verizon on why they can't get the Charge to work correctly. My wife really wanted the Charge, and was upset with me when I brought home the Bionic. I was going to get a Bionic for myself. Should I just transfer the Bionic to my line, and reactivate her old phone? How long does a problem like this last? I've read reports online of people getting the Charge in the mail this week directly from Verizon and experiencing the same issue. She loves the screen on the Samsung phones, but her OG Droid is nearly toast. Is there another Samsung 4G phone to be realeased soon?  I don't know what to do about this. If the problem with the Charge was going to be resolved soon, I'd just have her deal with the Bionic for a bit longer, but no one knows what the problem might be.

Dear rarbuckle,

As to your main question, I don't know (and I am not sure anyone on this forum knows) when this problem might be solved.  You did not indicate (and may not have been told) the specifics of the "known problem" that Verizon confirmed to you, so it would be pure guesswork as to when it might be fixed.

One small thought, however; the Charge owner's manual indicates that the phonwe should be OFF when removing or installing the SIM card.  You did not mention whether the Radio Shack folks had the phone off when they were dealing with the SIM card.  I realize that you don't have a Charge with you now, so you can't check this.  But if you decide to go back and try a Charge in future, you should make sure the phone is OFF whenever you touch the card.

I hope things work out for you and your wife.

The battery was out everytime the Sim was put in or removed. I don't have the ticket number with me, but one was created and then closed, saying that the could find no problem. The rep I spoke with said he could not find anything that would indicate that there was a problem beyone the phones we were trying, while the Verizon rep that radio shack spoke with say that there is a known issue. They told radio shack the problem was the sim cards being turned off within half an hour of activating when in the Charge. I have looked around the internet, and was able to find others experiencing this problem recently. The droid charge forums on phandroid.com have 3 other people looking for answers to this issue since this weekend.

There is a known problem with sims when people try to updae to the Gingerbread leaks, and don't relaize you need to remove the SIM card or the updater will earase it after OS load.

Moral: either be in the official tests so you get the specific installs that won't delete the sims. Know how to instal in other means. Or wait for the official release coming soon.
