Smartphone as a basic phone

I asked the representative if I could activate a Droid 2 and use it as a basic phone without the data plan.  They said yes and put me on a data plan.

You can cancel your data plan and put a basic phone back on your line.

It's been Verizon policy for YEARS that a smartphone needs a data plan. Why people still don't understand this I'm not sure. Almost makes me wish Verizon would just have everyone go to a Share Everything plan so this doesn't keep coming up.

What rep would tell you that you could activate a smartphone without a data plan?!  Are you sure?  It's not only policy, but it's simply not even possible.  Every time you put a smartphone on an acct the system automatically puts a data package on it...  Your best bet is to go with Share Everything with 300MB (for a single line) or 1GB (for multiple lines).  This would be the very minimum you can do...  There's absolutely no way to get around it, not even a supervisor/manager is able to override that.

I think many times there is a miscommunication between the CSR and the customer.  What the customer thinks they heard is not what the CSR thinks they said.
