Soft keys not lighting

I have a Droid Incredible 2 that is maybe a week old. The soft keys stopped lighting up. They will turn on while using an app in landscape but won't come on when I'm holding it vertical. I have recently changed the screen timeout and tried changing it back to the previous setting but that did not fix it.

I would REALLY like to avoid doing a factory reset. Any other suggestions?
