Synching Droid and Gmail contacts

I'm finding that when I update or create a contact on my Droid, the new info does not automatically xfer to my gmail contacts.   I want my Droid and Gmail contacts to always be the same.  I don't see any obvious settings on either gmail or the droid to do this (and I can't imagine why it wouldn't just be the default anyway!).  Any ideas?

When you create the contact, can you verify that you are creating it as a gmail contact? Do you have sync turned off?
