Just purchased Droid X. Can Microsoft Outlook and Droid X sync contacts and calendar?

I'll just pass along what little I know.
I know that you can sync (or import, anyway) Outlook contacts with (or into) Gmail contacts on the computer. And I think that it's possible that the calenders sync. But I'm pretty certain that it must be done on the computer and let Gmail sync its contacts and calender with the phone. That's how I did (and do) it.

The simple answer is YES ... The Calendar is pretty straightforward. You just need the setup and configuration steps completed in Google for your account. Then download & install Google "SYNC" to your computer. It has options for how you wish the syncing to occur.
For CONTACTS, it's a bit more involved (but not much) .. What I did was export my OUTLOOK contacts to my Google Account, modify/remove contacts that I didn't want populated to my phone, and then everything stays in SYNC between the phone & Google ... but I don't have the CONTACTS "syncing" with my PC ... only the phone.
Hope this helps. Good luck

Can it sync directly with outlook without going through Google?

Google is the main "engine" for syncing with the DROID X ... so the short answer is NO, as I understand this. I mean, for it to sync outside of Google would require you to constantly be connecting via a USB or WiFi or something to your main computer. Maybe there's a 3rd party APP out there to do that, but not sure. IMHO, the Google SYNC works very well and is pretty much flawless ... at least that;s been my experience since September.
