Syncing contacts

How do I sync my google contacts with my phone contacts? When I use the backup assistant, it only syncs the "phone" contacts I've manually added since I purchased the phone.

Got it! Had to export my google contacts from online acct,  put them on the SD card, import to "Phone Contacts", synced with VZW. Something tells me I missed a step in my initial setup.....

It should do it automatically when you add your google account to your phone.  However Ive noticed that the Droid X has real issues keeping facebook and gmail in sync.

I thought so too but it keeps a separate contact list  for google which does not sync in backup with Verizon.

How do I get the contact onto the SD card?  Do I have to remove the SD card and put it in the card slot on my PC?  I've hooked the phone into a USB port on my PC and can't find anyway to transfer the csv file from my PC to the phone that way.

Does anyone know why the contacts stopped syncing with the installation of 2.2?  And how to make it start automatically syncing again?

I got this from Happy Jack Daddy in a later post.  He really nails it

Seems to me that there are "Phone Contacts" and "Google" contacts.  If you open up a contact on your phone, tap on Linked Profiles and you'll see whether the contact is a Google contact, a Phone Contact, or both.   The contacts that you enter on your phone itself are both.  The contacts that you enter online while in your Gmail account are Google contacts only.  If you want all your contacts to be backed up to both Google and Backup Assistant, they have to either all be entered manually on your phone or they have to have gotten to your phone in the first place from Backup Assistant.    That's because Backup Assistant only backs up Phone contacts, and Google only backs up Google contacts.  If a contact is both, it'll be backed up in both places.   Sounds like your contacts are backed up at Google because that's where you entered them (or imported them to)  in the first place.  My advice, if you want them to also be in Backup Assistant, would be to export a CSV file from Gmail and then import that file into Backup Assistant.  At least I think you should be able to do that.  Hopefully that won't double your contacts!  I had the opposite problem.  When I got the Droid X I had all contacts from my old phone on BA and they were pulled down to my Droid X, and I wondered why they wouldn't sync and show up on their own in Gmail.  I finally exported a CSV from BA and imported it to Google.  I was worried it would double my contacts, but it didn't.  Worked great, so I'm thinking it should work fine in the opposite direction too.

Shouldn't there be a "Contact App" that would use both the Google and the Backup assistant contacts at the same time? And maybe use ALL the BA contacts? If not I wish someone would write one. The iPhone looks better all the time.

OK, call me confused ...  I don't see any of this happening on mine. After I iniitially set up and activated my phone, every Contact in my Google Acct was automatically populated to the phone in the app CONTACTS. If I make any change in my phone's CONTACTS, it automatically gets poopulated to  GOOGLE Contacts ... and vice versa without me needing to do anything.   I actually don't use Backup Assistant. Yea, I have it as an option on my phone that is active, but it just runs when it is scheduled - but I've never had a need to go online and use it for any recovery (yet).

OK, after more research, I see what you guys are saying .. and thanks for that detailed response Bill. Make more sense to me now what the OP's issue is/was.  I went into Backup Assistant (first time every)  and see that I only have 20 contacts there. However I have like 90 on my phone & in Google Contacts. So clearly they don't jive and I would have to do something special, like IMPORT them, to get them into B.A.

thanks for clearing this up.

Yea--well let me give you an example. I had my son on both. I also had his wife and him on with her numbers. He changed jobs so I tried to update his account. One or the other (google i think) put all his info on the joint contact. I had put it in his record. The only way I could solve it was to delete both contacts on both Google & BA and re enter both. The entry on BA never does appear. I know 'cause i made it a little different. This is all silly. Oh and only Contact Search shows these contacts. The stock dialer does not.

Verizon's Backup Assistant will only backup contacts saved as phone contacts.

The original Motorola Droid and the HTC Droid Eris and possibly even the Motorola Devour didn't have an option to use Backup Assistant. A person who had contacts in BA from a previous phone had to export their contacts out of BA and import them into their Google account. This was my particular introduction to Google contacts with my Droid Eris and I have never used the BA option on the Thunderbolt. I even had a stint with all my contacts on an AT&T phone.

I'm most definitely NOT a VZW employee. If a post answered your question, please mark it as the answer.
