I haven't tested it myself, but if I'm not mistaken, tethering on the Moto Droid was not included with this update even if the option shows up on the phone{edit for TOS violation}.
I just went to a local verizon store and asked them about tethering with the Droid. Looks like they want to charge an additional $30 on top of a already unlimited plan. Also for tethering you are limited to 5GB.
For something that I may use once a month and considering I am already paying for a data service on a device I am using for the tethering, this is rediculous, I might have to look for alternatives.
As I stated above, Verizon Customer Service has received no information regarding tethering the Motorola Droid. That means the store has not either. When and if they allow us to tether the Motorola Droid, I suspect we will have the same plan available to some of the other smartphones. That plan is 2 GB for $20. The unlimited data plan we already have for $29.99 is for the phone itself, not internet access for a laptop.

But yeah, I don't really use the tethering capabilities that often, so it's something that i'm not too concerned of having or not. Maybe if I actually travel a lot would it be something for me to consider.

for month free of charge. go to the web from your pc and they will guide you through setting up the computer and phone. a small one time fee for secured websites. Always work awesone. Wired and bluetooth.
supported by 3rd party apps, yes. But the native usb tethering doesn't work over 3G since apparently verizon doesn't know it's there and can't figure out a way to track it.

That's because you're violating your TOS by using a 3rd party tethering app and can be terminated for it eventhough Verizon has offered no alternative tethering option and apparently doesn't plan to do so. Not to mention the terms for the message board itself prohibit any talk about those apps or 4 letter wording your device. It is a little ironic that the store sales reps and even phone reps recommend the programs though.

How is it a 3rd party App when you Download it from the Very Market that is support by our phones! If its against the rules, dont give us direct access to it! TOS is a big bummer. But im glad you clarified why they keep doing TOS edits. I under stand rooting is bad (ha 7 letters). But if it is in the Market for authorized download it should be fair game and we should not get edited for suggesting it.
They give away the 3G hotspot for free on my wife's Palm Pre. I think that is garbage. We should be able to alter our phones to do whatever we want. Unfortunately, they make you agree to TOS so if you alter your phone you are lying to them. It doesn't matter that the Library of Congress says it is legal.

That's because they couldn't get people to buy the Palms and HAD to in order to move the phones.

yup, gotta love it. Any non-google app in the market is considered 3rd party. The Android market is open and controlled by Google so verizon doesn't really have any say on what apps are in there. The apps are also in Blackberry App World and once again Verizon has no say on it. They can, however, prohibit the use of those apps though. The quote below is directly from Verizon.
"Unlimited Smartphone and BlackBerry Plans and Features
These Wireless Email plans and features cannot be used: (1) for access to the Internet, intranets or other data networks except as the device’s native applications and capabilities permit, unless you subscribe to Mobile Broadband Connect; or (2) for any applications that tether your device to laptops or personal computers other than for use of the Wireless Sync or the BlackBerry solution, unless you subscribe to Mobile Broadband Connect. "
It is a little silly that the reps recommend the apps and Verizon is apparently making no effort to allow MBC on the droid eventhough the option is there. My suggestion is be smart, don't overuse it, don't brag about it where it's prohibited and don't complain if you go overboard and get caught.
