Why no tethering or WiFi hot spot on the Droid 2.2 update? I really don't want to

The word from verizon is that the chip in the droid won't support full wifi broadcasting. As I mentioned in the other thread, the apps available for rooted phones only provide ad-hoc wireless. Ad-hoc is less secure and not supported by all devices. The wifi hotspot uses infrastructure mode which allows the phone to be a true wireless router. The early leaked Froyo roms had a non-functional wifi hotspot that would just error out anytime you tried to use it and it was believed to be a driver issue which backs up what verizon is saying. USB tether has always worked on those roms and was rumored to not be in the official Droid Froyo update but that's apparently false based on several reports. There are mixed reports on whether or not it works outright or redirects you to a Verizon Mobile Broadband Connect sign up page.

So I pay for an unlimited data plan but that is really not unlimited data?

Basically. Data on the phone itself is the only thing that the $29.99 "unlimited" data add-on covers. Anything beyond that is extra. And it still isn't truly unlimited as Verizon reserves the right to terminate you if you're deemed as harming their network with overusage. Who knows what their definition of overusage is though.

It's unlimited data for your phone, not your computer. Read your contract.

Dunno why this is still is of discussion when the App Store has plenty of tethering alternatives.

I have successfully updated my droid to 2.2 but when i tried tethering i got redirected to Verizon Mobile Broadband Connect sign up page.So looks like we would have to pay for use the tethering feature. 😕
Did you get one of the OTA updates or did you manually install? Also, which build are you using? I manually installed FRG01B and the tethering option is in my network menu. I'm wondering if it is still in the FRG22 release. I got the same redirect page you were talking about.
