I've been experiencing this same thing for the 2 1/2 years I've had this phone. The folks at our local VZW store claim they have never heard of this issue. HMM! Convenient! It happens between the three phones on my account, all of which are Samsung Charges. None of the updates have fixed this problem.
I installed HandCent after two years of using the default text app, as a test, and my problems STILL exist with failed texts. Texts are also sent/received with portions of older texts jumbled into the new text. This has been an issue since I got the phone two and a half years ago. I don't think it matters which texting app is used.
