UPDATE RUINED PLAYING MOVIES / DIGITAL FIILES .. Sys Ver. 4.5.605MB810. And Ver 2.3.3

SOOO, I used to love this phone. It WAS terrific.. I could do everything I wanted to do on it.. Then the updates started happening.. And this last update was REALLY DISSAPPOINTING ..

I had purchased and transferred $850+ of movies, (yes EIGHT HUNDRED AND FIFTY DOLLARS) worth of movies to my Droid X when I got it.. I travel alot, and it WAS the perfect player for all the digital files that you get on your DVD/Blu-Ray discs, which btw are all in WMV file extensions..

They played perfectly for almost 1 1/2 years.. Then the new  Sys Ver. 4.5.605MB810.  And Ver 2.3.3 update came ...And low and beyhold.... NONE OF MY MOVIES PLAYED ANY MORE...

I called Verizon tech to explain this to them, and they said "Not sure why they played in the first place because the playing of WMV files is not supported."

I said, "Actually it WAS supported, because it was a VERY important factor in purchasing that particular phone."

They said, "It is not supported currently. They might have played but it was never supported."

I said, So I would like to UNDO the upgrade because I want my movies to play."

They said, "We are not able to uninstall an upgrade."

So AGAIN, I am disappointed with Verizon..

First, blame Motorola, not Verizon.... Verizon doesn't do the updates, Motorola does.

Second, go to the market and search for wmv player...... there are a LOT of free ones out there that can play wmv movies.

Another option is to get a wmv to mp4 converter. There are some free ones out there too.

OK, then I blame Motorola for the update that now has made playing my movies ineffective..

Thank you for your suggestion of going to Market and finding a player and/or a converter.. BUT I have tried these avenues already, as well as EVERY player and converter in Market, and NONE of them work, or play, or convert properly..

I am one of those people who just want to turn my phone on and have it work, and continue to work s it did when I got it..

I must be new to all these additonal needs to make a phone work, but I do not know what Gingerbread is..

Sorry to hear this ! But then this is exactly why i joined this forum.

My Droid X is trying to get me to install the exact same update. ' My wife has one too...we have not installed the update,

But are prompted to either "install now" or "install later" every 12 hours .

Any suggestions on completely removing the update (4.5.605.enUS)

THANKS FOR ANY SUGGESTIONS !

To the OP :  Try MoboPlayer  (free) - http://www.appbrain.com/app/mobo-video-player-pro/com.mobo.video.player.pro   This is a much more robust Video player and will play Videos that the native APP refuses to..  (been there, done that).

@Hollywood -- you cannot remove .605   .... without hacking your phone.  Best to work though any problems you're having. The update has been out for 5 months -- most issues or problems have been talked about and solutions provided for most of the issues that didn't turn into Features ..  (e.g., auto power up after shutdown).  Try the SEARCH feature in this forum if you have a specific problem ... otherwise create a new thread and we'll see if we can help you.

PS - Maybe the media player database got corrupted during the upgrade?

Possible solution that worked for others:

From homepage, menu-->settings-->applications-->manage applications.

Under the All Applications tab, select Media Storage, then clear data.

Next time you launch your Video player, it should force a rescan of SD card  - or you can download (free) SDrescan from Android Market.

Thanks for trying to help, Cody.. I tried both your suggestions, but neither worked.. It is SOOO disappointing.. So sad that I am going to probably have to get an additional device just to watch my movies! ..The Droid X was so terrific.. Now I look upon it as a broken toy..

I'm with you, Hollywood.. How do I un-update!!!

Sorry that didn't work ... but honestly makes no sense.  I can play all types of movies on mine after GB, including .WMV files.  strange.  I even have some software I installed on my PC that converts a DVD to an .MPG4 file for watching movies on trips.

(and no, you can't back out the update - short of 'hacking' the phone which will violate VZN's TOS.)

Have you done a Factory Reset?  Many people have done so after/before the GB update and it actually has solved a lot of issues ...  But of course you need to make sure you have all your movies & other data backed up off the phone.

OK, as a test (since I don't have any WMV files on my phone) I went to this site http://www.educationalquestions.com/video.htm

and downloaded the "SAMPLE VIDEO" near the top of the page.  It's only 12MB ..

I was able to play it just fine using the STOCK Video player & Mobo Video Player..  So Verizon's statement about WMV no longer being supported is wrong.

So not sure what the issue is for you...  Have you tried deleting them from your phone and re-copying them?  Have you tried playing them with the stock video player in SAFE MODE?

good luck.

PS - one last thought ...  How did you CREATE these .wmv files?  Did you use some PC software?  Maybe the issue is the Conversion "options" in your software ??  Just another idea to check out.

OK !!! FINALLY after trying LITERALLY 27 different conversion programs (all that did not work and all off android market).. I found a tech guy at Staples of all places, who told me about aimersoft converter program.. It converts WMV files as well as DVDs and Blu-rays to play as MP4 files..

AND SUCCESS!!!!! ... Whew! ... I am happy now..
