Unable to connect VPN, pptp or ipsec.

Topic says it all, VPN on my shiny new Droid X does not seem to work.

VPN endpoint is a WatchGuard Fireware XTM. I have also been unable to vpn to a Cisco PIX and a Linksys RV082.

Sitting here on my desk next to the X are an unmodified completely bone stock Droid, a froyo'd Droid, an EVO 4g, and an iPhone 3g. VPN works perfectly from all these devices.

I have tried over wifi and 3g, same problem. Ive rebooted the phone, ive toggled airplane mode on and off. Nothing seems to work.

!Attention

Unable to connect to the network. Do you want to try again?

I am having the exact problem.  If I get time tomorrow I'll call motorola. If you happen to call please post the fix, if they have one.

I went back to the store, explained my issue, mostly got a blank stare.

Demonstrated the connection working on the floor droid. Then showed it not working on the floor X.

'I'll look into it.'

Called VZW, talked to who claimed he was a tier 3 tech. He was not familiar with VPN. Suggested I call Moto support.

I am unable to get anyone to help with this issue. If anyone can post a contact or name of a support tech that was able to understand the problem please do so.

Unfortunately we are dealing with one of the flaws of open source code.  No one will take responsibilty for the issue.  I was in contact with Verzion via phone and email and esentially they cannot help and lay the blame of either Google or the manufacturer (in my case Samsung).   Their is no way to contact these folks in any direct way so we can only hope someone in these companies tackles the issue.

Here is one Verizon response after many emails.

My name is xxxxxx, and I received your email regarding the option to send a formal request to Verizon Wireless regarding the VPN issues you have experienced. I recognize the importance in making your voice heard. I am happy to offer you assistance.

Mr. xxxxx  we do not have an option to forward concerns regarding products except through a Verizon Wireless employee directly. The previous coordinator forwarded your concerns regarding the VPN issues with the Samsung Fascinate through our "Voice of the Customer" tool. This information will be reviewed by our product management team. Unfortunately, this team may not correspond with you directly, as they work with the manufacturers of phones to correct any ongoing issues.

You may also forward your concerns regarding the VPN access to Samsung directly by visiting http://www.samsung.com/us/support/contact.

I went into my RAS Server and everytime it was trying to connect I got this error.  Are you getting one as well?

Event Type:    Warning
Event Source:    Rasman
Event Category:    None
Event ID:    20209
Date:        7/15/2010
Time:        9:51:07 PM
User:        N/A
Computer:    XXXXXX
Description:
A connection between the VPN server and the VPN client 70.215.xxx.xxx has been established, but the VPN connection cannot be completed. The most common cause for this is that a firewall or router between the VPN server and the VPN client is not configured to allow Generic Routing Encapsulation (GRE) packets (protocol 47). Verify that the firewalls and routers between your VPN server and the Internet allow GRE packets. Make sure the firewalls and routers on the user's network are also configured to allow GRE packets. If the problem persists, have the user contact the Internet service provider (ISP) to determine whether the ISP might be blocking GRE packets.

Ditto. Same Error with DroidX using either 3G or Wireless.

Anyone have luck getting their VPN to work yet?

 - I *need* to be able to access Intranet sites and such, not having this feature is a serious issue.

Moto, VZW, any input on this?

I only tried a pptp vpn connection.  The problem appears to be that the mppe module needed for pptp vpn encryption is not included, even though the pptp vpn setup has an option for encryption.  So the only way I got it to work was to use a vpn server that has a "no encryption" option, and to configure the pptp vpn in the droid-x with the "Enable encryption" turned off. Not a very good workaround, since the vpn connection is unencrypted.

Verizon support was clueless.  Contacted Motorola and after several support escalations, they are reviewing this problem.  haven't heard back from them yet.  This is from my droid-x system log.

 E/pppd    ( 3242): unrecognized option '+mppe'

After reading this I tried without the ecncryption and it works ok, but obvioulsy utterly useless.

one other note, the DNS search does not work, so http://192.xx.xx.xx is ok but not http://server.domain.local this too renders is useless.  I wonder if DNS needs encryption?

I also wonder if VZ/Moto tried to kill off all routes to tethering, and this is a potential one, if that's the case the phone is going back at the end of 30 days.

Verizon / Moto -

You've put together a fantastic device here. Unfortunately, with VPN not working this phone has very limited use to business users. This is a critical flaw. PLEASE acknowledge this is a bug and will be hotfixed this week.

Some snippets from a chat with Moto t2 support this morning:

'the Droid X does not support CISCO VPN connections'

"I apologize. I was able to verify that this issue with VPN was already forwarded to our software developers and they are currently working on a fix to be released within Android 2.2 for the Droid X. Initially Android 2.2 for the Droid X was going to be released by the end of this summer but it could be released earlier, after they are done testing the Android 2.2 on the Droid X they will be able to provide an official date of release."

I pointed out it works fine on Droids running 2.1 -

"We are also aware that VPN connections worked perfectly on the original Droid. Thanks for your feedback."

"We have received quite a lot of feedback about issues with VPN which is why our software developers are looking into a possible bug. We are also still gathering information from VPN users that were able to connect using the Droid X to come to a conclusion and find a solution for the customers that are having issues."

I asked him if there were *any* users that were able to connect -

"I personally was not able to find a user that was able to connect via VPN in the forum but we are trying to gather information from other methods of customer communications, such as calls and emails. "

Hrumph.

I emailed Verizon on this issue & received this today:

"The connection with the Droid X and PPTP VPN in your office is not supported by Verizon Wireless. You will need to contact Motorola Support at 1-800-331-6456 so they can help support the connection."

I will call Motorola later & see what they say.

Spoke w/ Motorola level 2 support, and I have nothing good to report.  They said they aren't aware of a true bug, whatever that means.  They don't know if firmware 2.2 will fix this.  They suggested changing the server settings to allow an exception to the phone, but they couldn't specify what authentication exception.  They emailed a doc on setting up a MS Exchange Server, but that has no bearing on this issue.

Perhaps its time for an executive level carpet bombing and a message to consumerist.

I cant believe this issue is not being addressed.
