Update Fails

I woke up today to find that my phone had automatically downloaded and applied a firmware update. However, the update failed. My phone was sitting there with an alert logo on the screen. Eventually I figured out I could hold down Volume Up and press the Power button which gave me the following menu and output:
Android system recovery (3e)Use volume key to highlight;click power key to select.Reboot system nowApply update from sdcardWipe data/factory resetWipe cache partition---------------------------------------Finding update package...Opening update package...Verifying update package...Installing update...Copying fotaBoot to /data/system for customize reload...Verifying current system...asert failed: apply_patch_check("/system/app/HTC_IME.apk", "abc2d9bb294aec98e6a1b19ba636088d51152193", "ab287c74835502749212035e3c7b0af03a832524")E:Error in /cache/fumo/OTAPkg.zip(Status 7)Installation aborted.
I rebooted. Then I went into application settings and clearing all data and re-applied the update and that didn't work. I guess I'll have to do a factory reset to make it work. Which means I lose all my apps and have to download them all again. Bleh.
My real concern though with this whole experience is the fact that it automatically downloaded and installed the update in the middle of the night and because it failed, it disabled my phone. What if there was an emergency and someone needed to get a hold of me? This should not happen. Updates should not be automatic.

On reboot, after the update fails, I get the following dialog:

I did a full factory reset and re-applied the update and I get the same exact errors as posted above.

I did a factory reset and wipe from the recovery menu and didn't setup any accounts or sync anything after bootup and still the update failed. I noticed that the update automatically downloaded this time and was scheduled for installation. So apparently the update is mandatory and automatic. Yet, it fails. Wow.

Yesterday afternoon I got the update notification, and stupidly told it to update. It failed, dropping to the triangle with an exclamation point and sitting there. Since I've had that happen before, I figured I'd pull the battery, turn it back on, and defer the update until later when I'm not travelling (and hope that it worked then). No such luck - as soon as the phone was restarted, it powered down and did it again with the same result. Phone is rooted w/ ClockworkRecoveryMod installed, which I'm guessing is what is causing the failure, but the automatic retry (and it kept doing it several time) is major fail #1.
So I did a factory reset, and had a full backup I restored from early this month, and that got me back to working again. When I checked for a software update after the restore, it didn't find one, so I figured I was good... *bzzt*
Woke up this morning to find that the software update had been re-applied automatically and my phone was borked again. MAJOR FAIL #2. Had to re-wipe and restore AGAIN (and then re-update and configure the stuff since the backup, since I forgot to back it up again after doing it the first time - didn't make that mistake again). Now I'm worried that I'm going to have to turn my phone off overnight until I can at least manually defer the software update, and if I can't do that I may have to turn it off whenever I'm not using it. This is unacceptable. Even if I choose to root my phone and void my warranty, Verizon doesn't have the right to break it without my consent.
Verizon needs to STOP AUTO-DEPLOYING SYSTEM UPDATES, and it would really be nice if they told us when their updates would break rooted phones, seeing how common they've become...

I'm so mad right now; same thing happened and I knew better than to let update happen, but I saw it starting and didn't get to it in time. So now I have a brick because I'm stuck in boot screen and went to store said they can't flash it and i have to wait 5 bus days for new phone so here I am with no phone until next week...wish i would have just canceled my contract and went to Sprint. At least they dont' make you wait an eternity for new phone, unless you are a high value client!!! Thanks for the $200 brick VErizon!

I absolutely agree that Verizon needs to stop the pratice of automatic update. They should let the user decide. Just three days ago I woke up in the morning and saw my phone was in the middle of updating. I wasn't too happy about it because I didn't really want to update. Luckily for me the update went well and so far I haven't seen any differences.

I see I'm not the only one upset about automatic firmware updates. Luckily, my phone hasn't tried to auto-update again. Status shows the failure message I posted previously. I wonder though if this means my phone will never be able to be updated.
A response from VZW would be nice.

Well, I guess I'm not so lucky. Same thing happened today. I woke up and my phone was stuck on the alert logo. Update failed. Phone was disabled. This is ridiculous. I will contact VZW about it today since no representative has responded here.

Contacted VZW, they are going to have a tech try to manually push the update on Monday. Guess we'll find out what happens.

I received the new phone. It already has the update (4.08.605.3). So I guess I'll see what happens the next time an update comes out.
