Is there somewhere that I can download the correct 2.3.6 Update Zip file from? I'm not sure that the one I'm trying is lagit.

techstrip,

Maybe try this one again after removing the SD card, SIM card, and the battery.  Leave the battery out for a full 15 minutes so ALL power is lost in the phone (this is important), then reinstall the SD card, the SIM card and finally the battery.  Download the update file again in case the first time it was corrupted.

This is the update that I used to go from Froyo 2.2.1 to GB 2.3.6 and it has worked PERFECTLY.

Thanks Jerry. That is the one I used but I'll try the battery and sim card thing this time.

maybe if you look at it you'll see something glaringly obvious wrong.

I wish I could get it from another source but because of the Megaupload fiasco all but one of the servers are closed. Samsung doesn't have it.
